The Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia is seeking a n Assistant Director of Financial Planning and Analysis .

The Assistant Director will play an essential role in supporting the Batten School mission by enabling effective financial planning and assessing financial opportunity, risk, and performance. Requiring both a broad understanding of school operations as well as a detailed-oriented and analytic mindset, t his role will lead financial analysis and modeling , benchmarking, budget development, and financial and performance indicator reporting functions for the Batten School . In collaboration with the Batten finance team , the Assistant Director will manage the annual budget cycle and submissions, as well as maintain the School's budget through out the fiscal year. Financial analysis will cover areas as diverse as compensation, pricing, financial aid, program profitability, and indirect cost support . In addition, the Assistant Director will empower faculty and staff functional leaders through access to timely and accurate financial information.

This is a critical role in the Batten School and the Assistant Director should expect to be deeply and continuously involved in ensuring the accuracy and currency of budget s and financial forecasts . The successful candidate is committed to timely , accurate , and transparent communication with faculty and staff and is comfortable communicating with executive audiences. The Assistant Director will report to the Director of Finance and Business Services and will serve as an integral part of the 6-person Finance and Business Services team .

Hybrid work arrangements are available for this position with some in-person presence required on Grounds in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Responsibilities include:
  • Lead annual budget cycle , p repare operational budgets , and contribute to budget communication and presentation materials for the School .
  • Perform fiscal, statistical, and other studies and analyses of current and proposed School operations , determine drivers of actual financial results and provide insights to effectively manage school financial position, cash flows, and individual fund balances .
  • Recommend changes to systems and procedures to enhance planning effectiveness and efficiency while ensur ing conformance with budgetary provisions.
  • P rovide technical budgeting assistance to budget managers and make appropriate re commendations taking into account administration priorities, availability of resources, and impact on programs and the Batten community.
  • Assist in negotiating budget issues internally at the School and within the broader university community , which may include reviewing, researching, and recommending alternative budget strategies.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Minimum Q ualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in finance , accounting, business or public administration , or related degree
  • Four years of professional experience in related roles
  • Organized, analytic mindset able to conceptualize an organization al challenge into a technical analysis and then translate findings into actionable options for non-technical managers
  • Ability to plan, execute, assess, and improve an organizational financial planning process
  • Exceptional skills in core software systems including MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint
Preferred Qualifications:
  • MBA, MPA , or related degree or professional certification
  • Experience in higher educati on , non-profit, or public service organizations
  • Experience with financial and budgeting systems including Workday Financials , Adaptive Planning, QlikSense , and related University of Virginia financial software applications
  • Experience with scripting, coding, and /or specific statistical analysis packages
  • Demonstrated ability to triage a large volume of responsibilities and clearly communicate decisions and outcomes

The anticipated hiring range for this role is $ 95,000 - $105,000 commensurate with qualifications .

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
