The University of Virginia's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) is seeking an Assistant Director of Recruitment and Student Engagement to join our team in Charlottesville, VA. This position is integral to our efforts in attracting and enrolling prospective students into our PhD program. We are looking for a candidate who is enthusiastic, detail-oriented, and dedicated to working with a diverse student population.

Under the guidance of the Assistant Dean for Graduate Education, the Assistant Director will be responsible for various recruitment, admissions, and student engagement tasks. This role will primarily involve supporting student recruitment by offering consistent and strategic recruitment strategies and guidance to Directors of Admissions and Graduate Studies. Additionally, the Assistant Director will collaborate on establishing external partnerships and identifying and developing pipelines to enhance quality and representation in our applicant pool and, ultimately, our student body. The Assistant Director will report to Assistant Dean. This position is located in Charlottesville, VA.

Job Responsibilities

Recruitment:
As the primary recruiter for the Graduate School of Arts and Science, the Assistant Director will oversee the following:

  • Coordinate and attend recruiting visits at national conferences, HBCUs, and MSIs.
  • Develop and distribute GSAS and departmental recruiting communications to prospective students.
  • Support departmental admissions processes and assist with visitation programs to enhance application numbers and yields.
  • Effectively manage the prospective student pipeline to optimize enrollment outcomes.
  • Deliver in-person presentations and engage with prospective students, staff, faculty and other stakeholders.
  • Host virtual information sessions to provide detailed information to prospective students, and college academic advisors.
  • Engage with special populations and constituents to enhance student recruitment and networking opportunities.
  • Collaborate with Directors of Graduate Studies to offer accurate and current information about our academic programs for school-wide marketing materials.
  • Review petitions for waivers of application fees.
  • Audit departmental and school websites to ensure accuracy and effectiveness of information for prospective students.
  • Manage the recruitment, implementation, and assessment of centrally funded fellowship programs in partnership with other UVA staff.
  • Support schoolwide in-person and virtual visit programs.
  • Coordinate and facilitate reciprocal faculty recruitment visits with partner institutions.
Student Engagement
In collaboration with members of GSAS and the Dean's Office, the Assistant Director will help support the following:
  • Develop and coordinate affinity groups for GSAS students.
  • Develop and coordinate post-candidacy resources such as pan-departmental writing groups.
  • Coordinate the annual GSAS orientation and on-boarding programing for new students.
  • Provide guidance and support for Graduate Student Council.
Minimum Requirements
Education: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: At least three years of experience in admissions or related field or a total of eight years of experience in lieu of degree.

Preferred qualifications include:
  • Knowledge of best practices for recruiting student from diverse backgrounds
  • Proficiency in computer skills, including experience with CRM or database management.
  • Strong analytical skills and problem-solving abilities.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated capability to manage competing priorities effectively.
  • Ability to collaborate with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Self-motivated team player with the capacity to handle high work volumes and meet deadlines.
  • Commitment to understanding and adhering to departmental policies and procedures.

Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
