Responsibilities of the Assistant Director of the Publishing Laboratory include a twelve-month schedule of supporting the Department of Creative Writing’s Publishing Laboratory and its book and magazine operations under supervision of the director. This position maintains the desktop publishing facility, including a seventeen-station Macintosh lab and adjacent bindery. Additional responsibilities include mentoring the graduate student staff and supervising editorial and design projects toward departmental advertising. This role also supports the work of Chautauqua and Ecotone magazines and book imprint, Lookout.

The successful candidate will teach courses in publishing and contribute to curriculum development and administration of both the department’s BFA and post-baccalaureate certificates in publishing, as well as serve on departmental committees.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • A Master Degree of Fine Arts ( MFA ) in writing or publishing, or a Master of Arts (MA) in publishing
  • At least three years of work experience in editing, design, and/or production
  • Excellent computer skills (Mac); expertise in publication design with fluency in the Adobe Creative Suite of publishing software
  • Demonstrated excellence teaching at undergraduate and/or graduate levels
  • Thorough knowledge of the current landscape of literary publishing and its history, as well as contemporary literature
  • Superb oral, written, and verbal communication skills; attentive to detail and self-motivated; must be creative, dynamic, with the ability to multitask in a small but fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work well under pressure and with deadlines
  • Strong managerial and organizational skills
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • Expertise in the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign and Photoshop)
  • Knowledge of print-on-demand technology, bindery equipment, and book production
  • Experience teaching publishing curricula, with emphasis on social and cultural literacy in the field of publishing.
  • Familiarity with the missions and work of Ecotone magazine and Lookout Books
