Summary

Works under minimal supervision to provide assistance to Director, Surgical Services. The Assistant Director, Perianesthesia is responsible for the provision of quality patient services, operational effectiveness and efficiency in the delivery of patient care.

Experience and Education

Bachelor's degree in Nursing. Six (6) years progressively responsible, related experience, including a minimum of four (4) years' experience in manager level capacity are required. Master's degree and/or additional years of related experience strongly preferred.

Job Duties

  1. Manages the Perianethesia Departments at CUH and ZLP (Day Surgery, Preop and PACU) and delegates authority/ responsibility to meet goals. Manage, supervise and coordinate delivery of patient care in the Perianesthesia departments on a 24/7 basis. Assures efficient utilization of Perianesthesia resources by proactively managing the patient care continuum in collaboration with Anesthesiology and Directors.
  2. Ensure compliance with clinical patient care standards, regulatory requirements and established policies and procedures. Oversee various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, terminations and other related activities.
  3. Ensures consistency in clinical practice, policies, and procedures in collaboration of Nurse Manager(s) leaders across CUH and ZLP Perianethesia departments. Collaborates with the Assistant Director, Operating Rooms - CUH and ZLP to coordinate patient throughput and ensure consistency in adherence to policies and procedures across surgical services.
  4. Directs the resources of the clinical departments on a day-to-day basis to meet the strategic and operational plans set forth. Participates in the development of the clinical areas strategic and operational plans. Openly supports and consistently communicates mission of the organization.
  5. Serve as the staff and patient advocate to ensure optimal patient care. Assesses/coaches and evaluates nurse manager(s) level of practice and leadership competencies. Develops programs that foster continued clinical development of leaders and staff to positively impact patient care and career satisfaction of staff.
  6. Coordinates the development, implementation and evaluation of policies and procedures designed to improve operational efficiency. Coordinates quality assurance and performance improvement activities in collaboration with the Nurse Manager(s) providing leadership over the perianesthesia departments. Assures department meets its productivity and quality benchmarks.
  7. Ensures compliance with clinical policies and nursing practice, adherence to the National Patient Safety Goals, maintaining compliance with Joint Commission standards, and other clinical and regulatory measures. Collaborates to ensure accountability for nursing standards, evidence-based practice, and regulations. Responsible for regulatory readiness of the department at all times
  8. Collaborates with the Director, Surgical Services to determine fiscal requirements of department and prepare budgetary recommendations. Monitors the level of resources utilized in service delivery and determines the appropriateness of resource consumption. Develops action plans in conjunction with the Director, Surgical Services to ensure budget and resource efficiency, and satisfaction with patient care delivery.
  9. Plan, schedule and organize work for group ensuring proper distribution and delegation of assignments and efficient utilization of personnel, space and facilities; overall accountability for the requisition, care and maintenance of unit inventory, equipment and supplies.
  10. Responds to emergency situations and initiates appropriate responses as necessary. Remains calm and continue to provide leadership and a sense of professionalism during emergency situations.
