The department of Residence Life at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for an Assistant Director.

About the Opportunity

Under the general supervision of the Director of Residence Life, the Assistant Director is responsible for assisting with the overall administrative operations for the WVU Main Campus residence hall system. The Assistant Director will be challenged to foster and facilitate learning opportunities for residents through the residential living experience. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Residence Life and supports key areas of programmatic development and campus community to include night operations oversight, student conduct, residence hall programming, staff development, staff selection, staff training, safety and security, facility operations, student development, special projects, and crisis management. The live-out position is considered an essential employee and will participate in an on-call rotation schedule. Assumes weekday, weekend, emergency closures, and holiday duty coverage for the campus.

What You'll Do

  • Provides support of the daily operations for the designated campus area. Provides direction and oversight of various residence life operations and program components which could include, but is not limited to, residential curriculum, student conduct, staff selection, training, and professional development. Reviews and assesses operations to maximize services, processes, and procedures.
  • Responsible for the supervision of the designated campus area staff to include, but not limited to, supervision of Residence Life Specialists, Office Manager, and indirect supervision of para-professional staff members. Select and hire, process payroll, train, conduct formal performance appraisals, provide on-going feedback, and addresses issues of concern in accordance with Human Resource guidelines of staff members under the Assistant Director's supervision.
  • Responsible for the administration of the residence hall student conduct process for the designated campus area. Together with the Assistant Directors, advise, train, and facilitate the residence hall student conduct process to ensure the educational goals of the process are met. Consult and advise Residence Life Specialist regarding student conduct matters. Monitor reports and ensure timeliness of process. Review and establish priorities of incidents and police reports for purposes of adjudication. Responsible for serving as an adjudicator and appellate officer for residence hall cases. Establish and implement policies and procedures pertaining to student conduct. Provide information and support to the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities as needed.
  • Responsible for responding to student crisis situations to ensure the safety of the student(s) and the community. Consults with Carruth Counselors and ensures appropriate follow-up with CARE actions. Responds to building emergency situations and ensures appropriate department follow-up.
  • Manages student and parent requests for information and/or resolution to difficult situations. Responds to parents/guardian or other constituents regarding matters of concern.
  • Participates in Residence Life planning as a member of the Housing and Residence Life team. Represents housing at various special events, recruitment events, New Student Orientation, and open houses. Makes formal presentations to large audiences regarding Residence Life initiatives.
  • Works closely with the Director of Resident Life to assist and support the development of the department's residential curriculum and living-learning communities. Attends and supports residence hall programming and other university events and activities during evenings and weekends.
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Residence Life on related assessment projects for the department.
  • Serves as a liaison in support of operations for Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; Dining Services, Facilities and other university offices with distinct relationships with Residence Life.
  • Other special projects and duties as assigned by the Director of Residence Life.


Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in higher education, student personnel, student life or related field required.
  • A minimum of three (3) years experience in the field of student development and/or program development
  • A minimum of three (3) years experience with supervision, management, and activities planning
  • Residence Hall experience preferred
  • Ability to understand and manage a computerized database.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively and effectively with a wide variety of individual groups.
  • Ability to manage and resolve conflict, and to recognize and respond to sensitive, challenging, confidential issues and situations.
  • Initiative, creativity, and experience in program planning and staff development.
  • Knowledge and experience in successfully supervising and evaluating the work of others.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity and effective work efforts regarding equity, social justice, and overall success of ethnically and culturally diverse student population.


  • Valid Driver's License required. Must be able to visit resident halls and provide transportation to events if needed.
