HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL DO

Reporting directly to the General Counsel, the Assistant Legal Assistant provides legal counsel and advice to the University, and its affiliated 501(c)(3) entities, regarding sponsored research and regulatory compliance, including but not limited to government and industry-sponsored research, healthcare affiliation agreements, export controls, animal research, human subjects research, radiation safety, environmental health and safety, HIPAA, conflicts of interest, research integrity, high containment laboratories and research misconduct.

The University has experienced a tremendous growth in funded research over the past ten years. With this increased research funding and complexity comes heightened scrutiny and regulatory compliance.

This position works directly with administration, faculty and staff on all research-related matters in addition to communicating regularly with compliance offices of federal agencies. The position provides a proactive, highly strategic and collaborative approach to legal issues and develops solutions that balance ethical and prudent legal advice with effective risk assessment and that are responsive to external and internal needs in a complex Tier 1 university.

The scope of responsibility will include these specific duties but is not limited to the following,

• Provide strategic guidance and legal advice to the administrative officers of the university on legal matters relevant to a large public research university, particularly sponsored research and regulatory compliance issues (e.g. export controls, animal research, human subjects research, radiation safety, environmental health and safety, HIPAA, conflicts of interest, research integrity, high containment laboratories)

• Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of contracts and legal documents

• Anticipate and identify legal issues and counsel the university administration to develop strategies and solutions

• Oversees and participates in research regulatory proceedings involving the University

• Oversees responses to research inquiries, audits or investigations directed to the University, including gathering records and compliance with legal requirements

• Draft, review, and advise on university policies and procedures

• Provide guidance and direction to support staff and Graduate Research Assistants

• Research and analyze laws and regulations affecting higher education

• Provide training to the campus community on various legal issues through seminars and meetings

• Serve on university committees

Qualifications:

Minimum Hiring Qualifications:

JD from an accredited Law School and one year of related experience.

Preferred Hiring Qualifications:

The preferred candidate should have membership in good standing in the Georgia State Bar, or the ability to attain membership within 12 months of hire.
