Position Description

Assistant Maintenance Section Supervisor I and II

Supervises a group of maintenance and clerical employees responsible for providing a safe driving thoroughfare within a designated geographical area. Reports to a Maintenance Section Supervisor at a maintenance section with a rank sum ratio in accordance with the published rank sum. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with the public. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

Assistant Maintenance Section Supervisor I and II

  • Assigns and oversees the work of section and contracted crews; ensures all projects follow established safety guidelines.
  • Assists in budget preparation for the section.
  • Assists in planning, coordinating and implementing emergency response to inclement weather, accidents, and hazardous spills affecting area roadways.
  • Handles public complaints.
  • Inspects maintenance contract work.
  • Inspects road conditions, work-in-progress and work completed by the crews and contractors.
  • Maintains records on materials, supplies and personnel.
  • Oversees scheduling of equipment, material and personnel necessary for section projects.
  • Responsible for operations of section in absence of supervisor.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Assistant Maintenance Section Supervisor I

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience:

  • 5 years in roadway maintenance or construction related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have one (1) year supervisory/managerial experience. Project leader or lead worker experience may substitute for supervisory/managerial experience.


Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL)


Assistant Maintenance Section Supervisor II

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience:

  • 6 years in roadway maintenance or construction related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have two (2) year supervisory/managerial experience. Project leader or lead worker experience may substitute for supervisory/managerial experience.


Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

  • Commercial driver's license (CDL)

Assistant Maintenance Section Supervisor II

    • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
    • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
    • Maintenance contract inspection procedures
  • Proficient skill in:
      • Supervising technical staff


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Assistant Maintenance Section Supervisor I and II

  • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
  • Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise
  • Subject to hazards - moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other devices
  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs. at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs.
