The Assistant Manager of Bus Operations Training will support the management of TriMet's initial and ongoing training programs for bus operations staff. This role includes supervising Bus Operations Training Supervisors and assisting in the planning, coordination, development, scheduling, and delivery of training programs. Additionally, they will help manage all aspects of the bus training curriculum, ensuring continuous updates and improvements. The Assistant Manager will also oversee the daily activities of new hire trainees and Training Supervisors, manage and track continuous improvement processes for both new and regular operators, and assist in the planning, scheduling, and tracking of all new hire and ongoing training sessions. Responsibilities include developing training schedules for personnel and providing expertise in e-learning and Learning Management Systems (LMS) to enhance training methods.

Continuously update and improve related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and rule books. Collaborate with transportation managers to ensure timely implementation of safety interventions and re-training. Track the completion of all training programs and oversee the progression benchmarks for the new-hire program.

This role requires being onsite five (5) days per week.

Serve as a good steward of TriMet by regularly utilizing our transit system to maintain a strong and current understanding of customers' experiences and of TriMet's product and service offerings.

Essential Functions
  • Supervise Transportation Training Supervisors and Lead Training Supervisors. Establish objectives, standards, work schedules, and accountability for job performance. Act in accordance with TriMet's Wage and Working Agreement.
  • Design, develop and implement initial and recurrent training programs for Transportation personnel including Operators, Field Supervisors, Dispatchers, Controllers, and Station Agents, as assigned.
  • Perform training needs assessments, in consultation with Transportation Managers.
  • Work closely with Transportation Managers to ensure that safety interventions and re-instruction training occurs in a timely manner for initial, probationary and regular operators. Track all training to ensure completion.
  • Schedule development and delivery of annual and multi-year training plans, designed to fulfill training objectives and assure successful start-up of new service programs.
  • Assist in managing continuous update and improvement of training curricula, integrated with continuous update and improvement of associated Transportation Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and rule books. Align all created/updated material with internal department brand standards.
  • Ensure accurate and complete recordkeeping of training delivery, and document control for training curricula.
  • Develop integrated training plans, objectives, and schedules for Transportation personnel to fulfill all needs for new-hire initial training, recurrent training for existing employees, and new service start-up training requirements for both new-hire and existing employees.
  • Assist in development of improved training delivery methods, including e-learning and video-learning systems.
  • Assist in managing agency-wide CDL license qualification, continuing driver education and training.
  • Represent Operations Training in TriMet processes for accident review, bus and rail system change, security review, safety review, and new-hire screening and selection.
  • Collaborate with the Learning and Development Coordinator to train Training Supervisors to utilize the LMS to be able to author eLearning content.
  • Assist in managing and determining benchmarks of progression of new-hire and maintenance worker trainees.
Position Requirements

A minimum of a High School Diploma/G.E.D. is required.

A Bachelor's Degree in Education, Business, Public Administration, Transportation Management, Communications or a related discipline is preferred.

One (1) year of lead operations experience in transportation, transit or comparable service related industry is required; and

One (1) year of training experience is required; or

Two (2) years of adult education/training experience are required.

One (1) year of experience in combined union and non-union organization is required.

Possession of current/valid or ability to obtain Class "A or B" CDL issued by Oregon or Washington with Passenger Endorsement and No Restrictions on Airbrakes; ability to pass a driving record check meeting TriMet driving record standards.

Or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • The amount of credit a candidate receives for prior years of experience is based on the relevancy of that experience to the required or preferred prerequisites of the job description. Experience is prorated based on hours worked. LRHR assigns and validates the "credited experience".

Salary Range

Minimum: $83,587.00

Maximum: $125,382.00

Salary offers will be determined by a candidate's education, training and relevant experience. Any final offer of employment will fall within the range stated above. For transparency, we choose to list the full available grade range, however, TriMet's salary administration process will ultimately determine the final salary offered.
