The Public Service Pathways Program is part of Academic Outreach which is housed within Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost ( https://provost.virginia.edu/subsite/academic-outreach ). As a signature program under the Vice Provost for Academic Outreach, the Public Service Pathways Program is a broad and high impact program focused on the development of student competencies for effective and responsible public service. The program aims to build a culture of service across the student body through specialized programming and community-building. Our multifaceted approach centers around the following key goals:
  • Foster a Public Service Mindset: We encourage students to understand and define their collective charge and responsibility as citizens committed to public service.
  • Build Intentional Communities: We create spaces where students can engage deeply with issues of public interest, fostering a sense of belonging and shared purpose.
  • Centralize Opportunities: We curate existing public service, academic, career, personal advising, and experiential learning opportunities into a cohesive program.
The Public Service P athways Program is currently in its second year and is set to be fully operational for undergraduate students by the 2025-26 academic year with plans to expand the program to make it accessible to graduate students.

We are seeking an Assistant or Associate Director (level based on experience) to join our highly collaborative team. As a key staff member, you will report to the Director of Public Service Pathways and will also be an integral part of the program's larger planning team, which includes representatives from the Office of the Provost, the Division of Student Affairs (Student Engagement and the Career Center), the Karsh Institute for Democracy, and Madison House, the university-adjacent student volunteer center.

We seek a strong collaborator and communicator who enjoys working with undergraduate and graduate student populations and is motivated to be a part of a new initiative focused on public service. In this role, the Assistant or Associate Director will play a pivotal part in supporting existing programming for undergraduate students while also taking a leadership role in shaping an enriching experience for graduate students. This individual will take ownership of administrative coordination, content development, and implementation of programming as part of the successful launch of a Public Service Pathways graduate student experience. The ideal candidate will possess strong administrative capabilities, program outreach and promotion skills, and the ability to build successful working relationships with graduate programs and school leadership.

The scope of the Public Service Pathways Program Assistant or Associate Director role includes:

Graduate Student Experience Implementation:
  • Take ownership of designing and implementing a comprehensive Public Service Pathways graduate student experience. This involves creating engaging content, coordinating logistics, and ensuring a seamless experience for our graduate student community.
  • Collaborate with students, faculty, staff, and external partners to develop relevant program content that aligns with our strategic vision and goals.
Relationship Building and Advocacy:
  • Forge strong relationships with graduate programs and school leadership. Serve as the primary bridge between our program and these stakeholders, advocating for the best possible experience for students.
  • Engage in thoughtful conversations to understand graduate students' needs, aspirations, and challenges. Use these insights to guide program enhancements and ensure their success.
  • Be an excellent communicator, capable of effectively marketing and communicating educational programs.
Administrative Excellence:
  • Manage administrative tasks related to the program, including scheduling, budgeting, and reporting.
  • Coordinate program logistics, such as workshops, seminars, and networking events.
  • Promote program initiatives through effective outreach and communication.
  • Manage multiple projects at various stages simultaneously, from inception through implementation.
Collaboration and Integration:
  • Demonstrate commitment to advancing an inclusive experience in the program and capability to partner with diverse stakeholders.
  • Work closely with the Director to ensure seamless integration of activities across undergraduate and graduate student populations.
  • Foster collaboration among students, faculty, and external partners to create a vibrant and supportive community.
  • Demonstrate a proven record of taking initiative and solving complex challenges.
  • Assist leadership with drafting policies, developing procedures, setting timelines, implementing program reviews, and learning assessments to gauge success of programs.
  • Supervise undergraduate and graduate student workers and participate in the hiring of new personnel as needed.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Master's degree or Bachelor's degree and relevant experience may be substituted in lieu of Master's degree.
  • At least four years of relevant experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Ability to serve in both leadership and support roles effectively.
  • Experience in program development, community engagement, or public service.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse environment.
  • Ability to work effectively independently, within a team, and across organizational boundaries.
  • Strong meeting and committee facilitation skills.
  • An organized and detail-oriented professional.
  • Proficient knowledge of computer applications, including Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Canvas (or similar course management system), shared calendaring, and other collaborative applications.
  • Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends occasionally for events as needed are also required.
Preferred Candidate Qualities:
  • Previous experience advising and working with graduate students in a higher education setting.
  • A self-starter who is curious and adaptable to changing needs and practices as this is a new role within a new pan-university program.
  • Experience with budgeting.
  • Knowledge of assessment design and program evaluation.
  • Student employee supervisory experience.
  • Is excited by new challenges and new projects that arise as we continue the launch of Public Service Pathways.

Physical Demands - This is primarily a sedentary job involving use of a computer. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.

This position can work remotely for a portion of the time, estimated to be up to two days a week. The employee will need to reside in the greater Charlottesville area, however, as most student-facing programs will be in-person. The employee will be responsible for commuting expenses. A laptop will be provided.

The anticipated start date is May 2024. This position is an Exempt level, benefited position.

Anticipated Hiring Range: Assistant Director ($65,000 - $75,000) Associate Director ($70,000 - $80,000) commensurate with education and experience.
