The School of Education, Counseling, and Human Development (ECHD) is seeking candidates for two Assistant Professor of Counseling positions at our main campus in Brookings, South Dakota with a start date of August 2025. These are full-time, benefit-eligible, nine-month, tenure-track positions. Primary responsibilities include teaching, research, advising/mentorship of graduate students, and service

The mission of the School of Education, Counseling and Human Development is to provide high quality educational experiences to learners across the education and human science fields and to generate knowledge of human behavior, learning science and interpersonal relationships. The successful candidate will contribute to this mission by bringing expertise in counseling, fostering a collaborative learning environment, and engaging in meaningful research that advances the field. We are looking for a dedicated educator and researcher who can prepare students to meet the challenges of a complex and dynamic world.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Teach graduate courses in a CACREP-approved master's level program including clinical courses such as Practicum and/or Internship.
  • Develop course curriculum for both in person learning as well as online and hybrid with integration of innovative technology to enhance curriculum and student learning objectives.
  • Engage in scholarly activity, creative achievement, and/or research with interest in clinical mental health counseling, college counseling and student affairs, marriage and counseling, school counseling or rehabilitation counseling
  • Sustained participation in professional activities, scholarly activities, and service to the profession.
  • Contribute to student growth and development through advising and assistance.
  • Engage in service to the university and community
  • Commitment to serving a heterogeneous student body by delivering a student-centered education and using approaches that support equitable outcomes for all students.
  • Support college and school initiatives.



SALARY RANGE:

The salary for this position is commensurate with qualifications and experience, starting at $70,000. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 6% matching, 9.34 hours of sick leave each month, and eleven paid holidays. Relocation benefits are available per university's guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Earned doctorate from a CACREP-accredited Counselor Education program by August 2024 or an equivalent doctorate plus one year full-time in a CACREP accredited counseling program prior to the 2012-2013 school year.
  • Eligibility for licensure and/or certification in the state of South Dakota.
  • Knowledge of CACREP standards.
  • Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to teach in university settings (on-campus, online and hybrid).
  • Potential for scholarly activity, publication, and success in obtaining external funding to support research activity.
  • Clinical supervision skills at the graduate level.
  • Actively identify with the counseling profession through sustained memberships in counseling organizations.
  • Maintain certifications and/or licenses pertinent to the counseling specialty area(s).
  • Evidence of sustained professional engagement through at least two of the following: (i) Sustained professional development and renewal activities related to counseling, (ii) professional service and advocacy in counseling, (iii) ongoing counseling practice, or (iv) research and scholarly activity in counseling.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience with online course development and integration of innovative technology to enhance curriculum.
  • Experience working within rural and frontier communities.
