Job Description:
The Frank Batten College of Engineering & Technology (BCET) at Old Dominion University (ODU) invites applications for a 10-month tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level to begin in Fall 2024. We seek candidates with track record in the broad research area of Mission Engineering (ME) and its applications to domains requiring advanced engineering solutions to solve increasingly complex problems at the interface of technology and society. Such problems arise in research areas such as emergency response and management, disaster relief, community resilience, and hazard mitigation in transportation systems, healthcare, critical infrastructures, and others. This position is open to candidates from engineering disciplines in any of the academic departments in the BCET. The appointment will be in one of the five BCET departments depending on the selected candidate's background and expertise.

The BCET offers coursework and a certificate in Mission Engineering and has a cohort of doctoral students that conduct mission engineering related research. The College conducts extensive research that integrates into and complements various mission engineering research areas. The successful candidate is expected to perform teaching, build a strong externally funded research program, engage in various service activities, and demonstrate an unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) among students, faculty, and staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

The successful candidate must have:
  1. Relevant experience and expertise in one or more of the research areas outlined above, demonstrated by a record of peer-reviewed journal publications;
  2. Ability to teach core undergraduate and graduate courses; and
  3. A demonstrated commitment to student success, recruitment, and retention.
Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates with:
  • a demonstrated record in external research funding, interdisciplinary collaboration, and industry and government partnerships; and
  • experience in applying cutting-edge engineering concepts, techniques, and tools (e.g., digital engineering, digital twins, artificial intelligence, modeling and simulation, optimization, multidisciplinary design, and model-based systems engineering) to large-scale problems and complex adaptive systems that arise in the research areas listed above.
