Job Description:


Supervisor: Chair, Undergraduate Science Department

Status: Full-time

Standard Hours: 9-months

Job Location: Longmeadow

JOB SUMMARY:

A Ph.D. in natural sciences (or equivalent discipline) from an accredited institution is required. Successful teaching and practical experience with active learning and alternative pedagogies in the natural sciences in undergraduate science courses are required. The ideal candidate will be able to teach courses within, Anatomy & Physiology, Immunology, Organismal and Evolutionary Biology, and Environmental Science but we welcome additional areas of specialization that support our science degrees. The ideal candidate will also mentor undergraduate students in independent research projects and may provide guidance to students pursuing careers in Medical and Health Sciences.

This position also necessitates an innovative spirit, and collaboration with other faculty and staff in SHNS, as well as the community, to develop unique opportunities for students and prepare them to flourish in their academic journey.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Teach a minimum of eight (8) courses (24 credits) annually to include undergraduate and select graduate courses.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to active learning strategies, mentoring students, and collaborative scholarship, as well as flexibility in teaching students with different types of learning preferences.
  • Mentor undergraduate students in independent research projects.
  • Create a safe and inclusive learning environment for students.
  • Effectively assess student performance.
  • Assist in curriculum development.
  • Maintain accurate course records and submit related reports as requested.
  • Maintain scheduled office hours according to University policy.
  • Support the Department and University through service on appropriate committees and attendance at University events with the opportunity to extend service to the greater community.
  • Understand and appreciate the University's and SHNS's missions, purpose and goals and the role of faculty in achieving those goals.
  • Participate in professional development as required.
  • Perform any other duties or tasks as assigned by the University.


OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

If you operate a University owned, leased, or personal vehicle at any time while performing your duties you must follow all policies and procedures outlined in the Operations Manual. You must have a valid driver's license and must successfully pass the online safe Driving Course and driving record check at the time of hire and annually thereafter. Additionally, you must report any driving offense, on or off company time, which causes a loss, suspension, or any other change in your license status. You must report this change within one business day of the offense. You can report this change to the Human Resources Department or your direct supervisor. Failure to do so can lead to disciplinary action, up to and including termination.

Requirements:

  • Ph. D. in natural sciences (or equivalent discipline) required.
  • Minimum of one year or equivalent of successful college teaching experience in undergraduate natural sciences courses and evidence of scholarly and creative activity is required.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to adhere to University policies and procedures.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and within FERPA and HIPAA guidelines.
  • All new employees must complete the FERPA, Anti-Harassment, and any other required online training within 15 days of employment.
  • Should be committed to a culture of diversity, equity, respect, and inclusion; demonstrate the ability to build working relationships with people having a wide variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences different from one's own.
