The Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago invites applications for a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor in the field of Korean Studies. We seek applicants with research and teaching interests in one or more of the following areas of study, regardless of time period: media, performance, literature, and/or popular culture. The expected start date for the position is July 1, 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The selected candidate will pursue their own research agenda, collaborate with faculty in EALC and other departments, and will teach in both the undergraduate and graduate curriculum. Scholars with interdisciplinary, diasporic, and interregional research interests are strongly encouraged to apply. The teaching load for tenure-track positions is typically four courses per year on the quarter system. Additional responsibilities include advising at all levels of the program as well as service on departmental and university committees.

This search is part of an initiative to expand Korean Studies at the University of Chicago, and will run in parallel with a search in comparative East Asian Visual Culture in the Department of Art History: https://apply.interfolio.com/153014 .

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have an active research agenda resulting in publication in leading venues in their field or the potential to develop such a publication record, as well as skills in analyzing primary source texts. Candidates must also have the ability or potential to be an excellent teacher and mentor at the undergraduate and graduate levels and will be expected to teach introductory courses in Korean culture, media, literature, and/or performance, in the University’s Core curriculum, and more advanced courses in their areas of specialization.

All requirements for receipt of a PhD in a field related to the search must be completed prior to the start of the appointment.
