Social Work MSW Program

The University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) is the largest comprehensive, fully accredited university in the Kansas City area. As one of four universities of the University of Missouri system, it offers traditional and interdisciplinary programs and is designated as a high research activity university by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Few urban universities have the depth and breadth of disciplines (ranging from medicine to the performing arts) offered at UMKC.

To recast the institution's investment strategy and academic landscape, UMKC recently launched the newly designed School of Education, Social Work, and Psychological Sciences as part of its UMKC Forward initiative. The School prepares educators, educational leaders, mental health and human service providers, and researchers that engage in critical thinking, promote social justice, uphold ethical standards, empower communities, and embrace continuous learning and growth. Through excellent teaching, world-class research, and meaningful and deep engagement in and with the community, we will change the educational, mental health, and well-being landscape of Kansas City and beyond. With over 16,000 alumni, the school openly welcomes and supports all people who possess a broad range of backgrounds, life experiences, interests, and aspirations.

The UMKC MSW program has been CSWE-accredited for over 20 years and has a graduate student body of approximately 90 per year. Its curriculum focuses upon advanced generalist social work practice in an urban environment and develops:

• Theory-based assessment of human behavior in diverse social environments;

• Multidisciplinary agency and community engagement skills;

• Program evaluation and applied research methods; and

• Measurable means for effective engagement with diverse populations to achieve social and economic justice, enhance wellbeing, and empower individual capacity.
