Job Summary:

The Department of Anesthesiology, Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology has an opening for a full-time Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiologist at the faculty rank of Assistant Professor. The chief responsibility of the department is to assure the best possible outcomes for our patients having surgical operations, painful invasive and diagnostic procedures. The University of Colorado affiliated hospitals have top nationally-recognized physicians delivering the best possible anesthetic care as well as a full range of perioperative care.

The primary clinical site for this position is Children's Hospital Colorado (CHCO). This premier hospital, which has been ranked among top five in the country for almost two decades, is a 553-bed tertiary care children's hospital located on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado. CHCO has a level IV NICU and is the only level 1 pediatric trauma center in Colorado. With 4 hospitals, 16 network of care locations and more than 500 outreach clinics in over 29 cities, the CHCO network serves the children of Colorado and surrounding regions. In service of CHCO, the Section is made up of a multidisciplinary team of highly trained pediatric anesthesia experts that carries out more than 27,000 anesthesia procedures per year, specializing in the unique needs of children undergoing surgical, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

The attending pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist administers care alone or supervises physicians-in-training (residents), certified registered nurse anesthetists, and certified anesthesiologist assistants. When working alone, he/she examines the patient before and after anesthesia, writes pre and post anesthesia orders, confirms that the patient is ready for anesthesia before induction, manages the anesthetic period, and follows patient as long as is appropriate in the post anesthesia period.

As an attending pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist, the position may be required to perform these services in the operating room, in the labor and delivery area, in radiology, and in the outpatient procedure center. Participation in the cardiac anesthesia call team is expected, and includes weekday, weekend and holiday call coverage. In addition, the pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist will be part of the St. Joseph's neonatal call team and cover neonatal surgeries at St. Josephs Hospital (level IV nursery).

As a faculty member of the School of Medicine, the position is expected to contribute to the teaching needs of the Department and the School. This may include, but is not limited to, preparing and delivering lectures, serving as a preceptor, and providing one-on-one instruction. Attending anesthesiologists, as faculty members, are also expected to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the specialty by way of clinical or laboratory research.

The position is full-time, at-will, and will be assigned clinical duties at the Children's Hospital Colorado. The candidate must have a strong working and theoretical knowledge of Anesthesiology and Peri-operative Medicine as well as experience in teaching Anesthesiology. To be considered for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor the candidate will have completed ACGME fellowship training in clinical pediatric anesthesiology.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

  • Licensed to practice medicine in the State of Colorado by effective hire date
  • American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) Certified, ABA Board Eligible, or possess certification of foreign training that is recognized as equivalent to its diploma by the American Board of Anesthesiology
  • Fellowship-trained in Pediatric Anesthesiology
  • Fellowship-trained in Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology (one year)


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Board certification in pediatric anesthesiology is highly desirable and expected within two years of employment.
  • Experience teaching Anesthesiology
  • Currently working as a dedicated pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong working and theoretical knowledge of Anesthesiology and Peri-operative Medicine
  • Strong working and theoretical knowledge of congenital cardiac anesthesiology
  • Strong work ethic and excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team in the Heart Institute at Children's Hospital Colorado
