YMCA Storer Camps offers educational programs, character development and team building services to youth and adults through our three core programs: Outdoor Environmental Education, Summer Overnight Camp, and Specialty Programs & Group Retreats. Located in southeast Michigan on 1,200 acres surrounding Stony Lake, our 15 unique ecosystems provide a natural learning environment for campers, students, teachers and families year round.
Job Description
Assist the Summer Camp Director in the implementation of the Summer Camp program. Help with staff supervision and planning scheduled summer programs.
Qualifications
Must be at least 21 years of age and have had two years working in an organized resident camp setting. Must have a sincere desire to work with children. Possess certifications in CPR and First Aid. Lifeguard certification encouraged.
Essential Functions
• Supervise and communicate with the appropriate Village Directors on a daily basis to discuss needs, program schedules, village activities and camper/staff issues.
• Handle camper behavior issues and work closely with the Summer Camp Director, Behavior Specialist, parent/guardian, camper and counselors involved.
• Evaluate the performance of the Village Directors throughout the summer, offering positive encouragement and coaching.
• Assist the summer staff in the organization of opening and closing days including assigning duties to summer staff for opening and closing days.
• Ensure the scheduling of village activities and assign responsibilities, class instruction, and activities among supervised staff.
• Supervise counselors and campers during trips away from the Storer Camps facility, providing campers with a safe and fun experience.
• Plan the scheduling and implementing of large group activities that will involve all programs under direct supervision.
• Serve as Manager on Duty for assigned evenings, being on call for all emergency camp needs.
• Lead various sessions of staff training.
• Ensure the adjustment of staff to camp life, and help the personal growth of staff.
• Interpret and enforce safety and health regulations.
• Assist with program activities and other activities in the center, working closely with the Summer Camp Director.
• Implement the camper behavior management policy.
• Follow all camp policies, rules and regulations.
Any other duties that enhance the camp programs and the experiences of campers.
Effects on End Result:
The Assistant Program Director is part of a staff team that will work together to provide quality camping programs in an environment that fulfills the YMCA’s mission and Core Values of Honesty, Caring, Responsibility, Respect and Faith.
