Position
Summary:


In addition to upholding all program and philosophical foundations of Hume House Child Development & Student Research Center , the role of the Assistant Teacher is to support the Lead Teacher/Director in maintaining the high quality, evening care program, and curriculum of the lab school. The Assistant Teacher will provide consistent guidance and support for children ages 5-12 and undergraduate student workers.

Daily Routines:
  • Contribute to the daily maintenance, clean up, and routine care of the children and the center.
  • Help with setting up the learning environment for the children and undergraduate students, plan in collaboration with the Lead Teacher to ensure an organized and functional daily routine for all.
  • Assist with maintaining order and safety at all times.
  • Supervise, manage, and participate in classroom activities with children.
  • Assist the Lead Teacher/Director in developing weekly curriculum plans and activities that promote social, academic, and creative learning.
  • Assist the Lead Teacher/Director in maintaining communication with parents.
  • Supervise student workers and volunteers.
Assistant Teacher/Child Interactions
  • Provide consistent guidance for the children during the project and work of the day.
  • Interacting with respect and loving consistency to the needs of all the children in all situations.
  • Actively involved in the children's work and always available for support when needed.
  • Interacting at the child's level of play and experience and scaffolding children's ideas whenever necessary.
  • Advocate for the appropriate resolution to children's problems and offer support to children learning the problem-solving process.
Assistant Teacher/Parent Interactions
  • Supporting and understanding each parent's cultural background and family structure.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of all family information and never communicating personal family information outside the CDC.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
& Education:
  • Associate's degree in Education.
  • Minimum of two years of experience working in a school setting and/or c hildhood program with children ages 5-12 years.
  • Must possess current First Aid and CPR Certifications and be updated annually.
  • Must obtain all DCF required training including 45 hours of training and Literacy training documented and Current transcript filed with DCF including child abuse before the hire date.
  • Background check including Fingerprints cleared by DCF fingerprinting organization.
Level 2 Background Screening Requirement:

Once an offer of employment is made, the candidate must pass a Florida Level 2 Background Screening.

*The Assistant Teacher cannot start working until all background screening results are returned and cleared or until they have received an approved exemption.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Ability to be supportive of student interactions and assist in providing opportunities for student engagement with children.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of all family information and never communicate personal family information outside of Hume House.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with department directors, lead teachers, assistant teachers, parents, and undergraduate students.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a high degree of professionalism.
  • Ability to work as a team and independently.
  • Ability to work with children and undergraduate students.
  • Must be open and understanding of various cultures, ethnicities, languages, and socio-economic levels.
  • Strong organizational skills to maintain daily operations.
Additional Position Information:
  • Work Schedule: The Assistant Teacher role is a part-time, 11-month appointment, scheduled from mid-August through mid-July of each year for a total of 20 hours weekly. The schedule for this role is from Monday to Thursday, 4:30 pm to 9:30 pm.
  • Pay Rate: Rollins offers a competitive hourly rate and there are no benefits associated with this position.
Work Environment:
  • Ability to observe and maintain the safety of children in various center locations, including a playground, on and off campus walks, and group events.
  • Front-facing customer service role on-campus (inside and outside).
  • Must be able to physically lift and carry children up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to physically move around the floor and classroom areas without assistance.
