Position Summary

Assistant Teachers are responsible for classroom management, supervision of the children, implementing activities in the classrooms, as well as supervision of University students and substitute teachers. This position also involves the implementation of all classroom activities according to the standards of the NAEYC, DECAL, and the Child Development Lab at the McPhaul Center.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Previous experience working with young children, their families, and other educators; ability to interact with other adults and children in a respectful, courteous, professional manner; understands, accepts, and promotes the philosophies and standards set by NAEYC, DECAL, and the CDL.

Assists the lead teacher in daily program activities for the classroom by:
  • understanding and implementing the lesson plans through activities with children
  • preparing materials for use with children
  • taking anecdotal notes and maintaining developmental checklists

Duties/Responsibilities

Ensures safety and supervision of all areas (indoors and outdoors) by being aware of the group as a whole and moving around indoor and outdoor environment to best ensure adequate supervision.

Manages children, regardless of developmental level, in a calm, respectful manner and assists them in developing problem solving skills by:
  • modeling, facilitating conversations, and intervening when issues arise between children
  • using a variety of guidance techniques appropriate to the situation, including choices and redirection
  • teaching children empathy skills through recognizing their feelings and the feelings of others

Assists in maintaining a clean, healthy, and safe environment by following the cleaning and sanitation practices mandated by DECAL and helping children at clean up time.
