Assistant Vice President, Veterans Programs

University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) seeks an Assistant Vice President (AVP), Veterans Programs in the Stateside Military Operations (SMO) unit of the Office of Global Military Operations (GMO). Reporting directly to the Associate VP, Stateside Military Operations, this AVP is responsible for university-wide veteran student services and support programs, and ensures that veteran students receive the resources, support, and advocacy needed to have a more successful student experience at UMGC. In executing this responsibility, the AVP has direct authority over the Veterans Certification Office (VCO) and the Veterans Initiatives & Outreach Office (VIO) and supervises the Director, VCO and the Director, VIO.

An estimated 15% of domestic travel required.

Hybrid role with relocation to the MD/DC/Northern VA area strongly preferred.

Specifically, this AVP:

Develops initiatives that focus on new student-veteran recruitment and student-veteran retention that support the overall UMGC growth strategy.

Plans, organizes, and directs all University-wide, non-academic program-related initiatives and support programs related to student veterans.

Supervises the Director, VCO and provides necessary resources to ensure that all certification activities for veterans' educational benefits-to include mandated training, reporting, compliance, and processing requirements-are conducted pursuant to all federal and state-level policy, regulatory and statutory requirements.

Supervises the Director, VIO in assessing, monitoring, and tracking the needs of the current student veteran population, and developing & executing initiatives based on identified needs.

Coordinates the collection of data and information across the university for submission to Military Times "Best for Vets" Annual Survey, Military Advanced Education, and other publications that rank colleges and universities on quality of veteran student services.

Supervises the administration of the Pillars of Strength scholarship program - to include collaborating with various entities to secure funding and support resources for scholars, as well as liaising with non-UMGC stakeholder organizations which support the program.

Maintains up-to-date information on effective veteran services at other institutions and in the community.

Serves as a professional resource to the University's staff and faculty regarding helpful strategies for working with student veterans.

Collaborates with VA agencies at the local, state, and federal level; non-profit groups and advocacy organizations; and other independent agencies on securing resources to enhance the holistic well-being of student veterans.

Partners with public/private organizations and state/federal agencies as well as other key stakeholders that support and influence military and veteran student education.

Collaborates with peers and colleagues across the university to ensure quality of and consistency within university student services to optimize the military student experience.

Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Required education and experience: A demonstrated ability to get things done. An earned Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher learning and five (5) or more years of both strategic and operational leadership; demonstrated ability to interpret and apply regulations, policies, and procedures; knowledge and experience with memorandums of understanding/agreement and contracts wth both the public and private sector; MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Google products; successful work experience in a global environment, and must be able to pass a U.S. background check.

Preferred education and experience: An earned Master's degree from an accredited institution of higher learning; a proven track record of problem solving and decision making skills involving calculated risk in a multicultural setting; experience working with academic partners and third-party agencies; ability to bring about strategic change to meet organizational goals and objectives; ability to establish an organizational vision and to implement it in a continuously changing environment by exhibiting creativity, innovative initiative, external awareness, flexibility, strategic thinking, integrity, and resilience; previous military experience as a field-grade officer or senior non-commissioned officer (as command sergeant major or command master chief), or equivalent civilian educational service at comparable grade and responsibility, is a plus.
