DESCRIPTION

The Associate Director provides leadership and direction for two functional areas in the unit, Communication and Leadership and Community Service. Under the direction of the Executive Director of the Center for Student Involvement, the Associate Director has full programmatic responsibility for supporting, developing and implementing a broad range of existing programs and new initiatives for a diverse student population, including co-curricular seminars, classes, and programs, communication and leadership training programs, dialogue programs, one-time and ongoing community service initiatives, national and international service programs, campus and community partnerships, co-curricular social innovation initiatives, and education, training and reflection opportunities.

Additional responsibilities include on-going and sustained collaboration with the six undergraduate colleges, student affairs, and academic departments and programs to meet the co-curricular and developmental needs of UC San Diego students. This position also serves an important collaborative role with community partners and agencies. These responsibilities require high levels of independent thinking and strong judgement, decision making, supervisory experience, strategic planning, policy development, risk management experience, problem analysis, change agency, and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in student affairs, education, leadership studies, counseling or related field and 3-5 years of progressively responsible work related to Student Affairs in an academic setting or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's degree preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of Student Affairs / Student Life specialization. Demonstrated knowledge of and best practices in leadership and communication theories, co-curricular service-learning pedagogy, social innovation, social issue or social justice education, or equivalent. Demonstrated experience in leadership, interpersonal and professional communication, public speaking, and civic skill development in a higher education setting.
  • Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Knowledge and demonstrated skill to interact with Student Affairs and other campus administrators to implement strategies that promote unit activities, goals, objectives, and responsibilities. Skills to identify existing and potential programmatic partnerships and cultivate collaborative relationships with internal and external constituencies.
  • Advanced abilities in project management, problem identification and reasoning skills. Ability to manage full programmatic responsibility for developing and implementing abroad range of programs and services related to leadership, communication skill development, community service and social innovation.
  • Advanced ability to develop original ideas to solve problems. Demonstrated skills to work well with diverse individuals and groups across identity groups. Demonstrated knowledge of social justice topics and best practices in equity, diversity and inclusion work in a higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated highly effective interpersonal, group, and cross-cultural communication skills. Demonstrated knowledge of equity, diversity and inclusion best practices in higher education. Skill in public speaking and presentations. Ability to lead and facilitate effective group activities.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance. Demonstrated supervisory experience and skill to routinely monitor production and quality of work being produced by staff and set performance standards, observing behavior, providing objective feedback, counseling, and implementing corrective action as needed to mediate disputes or otherwise help to resolve conflicts; and to provide effective leadership/coaching/mentoring. Demonstrated experience and skill to assess staff capabilities and workloads and redistribute when necessary. Demonstrated experience and skill to teach/train staff in all aspects of job duties/responsibilities.
  • Theoretical and experiential knowledge in budget development, planning and financial management or an equivalent combination of education and strong demonstrated management experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences. Knowledge and demonstrated experience in program development including effective interaction with campus administrators and demonstrated ability to develop internal procedures to facilitate such interaction.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated success in marketing and branding co-curricular programs for a student audience.
  • Knowledge of current trends in leadership, communication development, co-curricular service-learning, community service and social innovation.
  • Proven skills to write student learning outcomes, evaluate programs and assess outcomes.
  • Proven skills to effectively organize learning opportunities that are consistent with students' developmental stages and personal and professional skill development.
  • Ability to interpret and apply University of California and UC San Diego policies and procedures.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $67,200 - $119,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $32.18 - $57.28

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.
