The role of the Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO) at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospitals is an essential leadership position within the Spaulding organization network. The role encompasses patient-focused management, personnel management, business administration of the department, development of collaborations and team partnerships at the unit, hospital, and network levels as well as active participation in both hospital and network committees/councils. Reporting to the Chief Nursing Office of Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospitals, the ACNO ensures the provision of excellence in three domains, nursing operations, organizational business and excellence in nursing services and practice. The role is centric to ensuring the promotion of satisfaction and development of nursing and support staff, providing operational efficiency, and ensuring compliance with hospital and regulatory policies and standards of practice.

Key Responsibilities

• Participation and representation nursing/nursing support personnel in formulating strategic plans, goals, objectives, and outcome-based results to carry forward the nursing and organizational mission and vision.

• Monitor and evaluate quality of public reported measures in collaboration with SR Quality team.

• Maintain oversight of day-day operations of patient care in collaboration with VP of Operations, unit nurse directors and interprofessional colleagues.

• Escalation of operational issues that impact safe quality care.

• Collaboration with interprofessional colleagues for optimal patient/family outcomes.

Accountabilities:

People

The ACNO is a steadfast advocate for ensuring a culture of safety and healthy work environment. The ACNO will:

• Foster staff engagement, promote safety and support clinical staff professional growth and development.

• Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion across the teams.

• Engage in active-proactive recruitment and retention efforts, collaboratively with unit-level nurse directors and human resources.

• Provide and support leadership training, coaching and development for current and emerging leaders.

• Engage within meaningful recognition, promote collaboration through team-based strategies and create communication pathways that allow for a healthy work environment and authentic leadership principles.

Finance

The ACNO is expected to be a steward of the SR Hospital's financial resources, enabling success to fulfill the mission and vision of the organization. The ACNO will:

• Develop and implement operational plans and budgets (inclusive of capital) to support nursing and the organization's finances in collaboration with the finance department and the CNO.

• Participate, manage, and monitor budgets and payroll overall and at the unit-level in tandem with the nursing directors.

• Assist, advocate, plan and initiate, as appropriate, in the management or development of new care delivery models through fiduciary responsible actions and initiatives for the betterment of the organization. These include but are not limited to clinical staff plans, key performance measures and environment of care needs.

• Ensure the CNO, executive leadership and clinical leadership are informed of critical issues related to nursing and/or originating in nursing that may affect the operational efficiency and effectiveness of care.

Quality, Evidence -Based Practice & Research

The ACNO is a pivotal agent for advancing and upholding the science of nursing. The ACNO will:

• Support clinical and leader participation within professional governance.

• Promote evidence-based practice, research and quality improvement initiatives at the overall organization and unit level with nurse directors utilizing the nursing leadership management system and leader standard work processes established.

• Cultivate formal and informal leadership communication, collaboration, and team-based excellence in care.

• Ensure professionalism, accountability, and action result outcomes for optimal care delivery.

• Participate in the design and development of systems synergistic to the ANA Code of Ethics and the ANA Standards of Nursing practice.

• Assist in the development of standards of practice, in collaboration with nurse leaders, to advance the specialty of rehabilitation nursing.

• Establish goals, objectives, and outcomes in nursing/nursing support to meet the changing community needs of patients, families, and staff.

• Assist and support the development, implementation and management of nurse competencies and transitions to practice.

• Utilize clinical, human resource information, and financial data to facilitate a continuity of care.

• Support the research process, dissemination, and utilization of research findings in nursing, health, policy, and management systems.

• Initiate and lead department and cross-functional team-based projects, initiatives, and committees/taskforces to eliminate barriers and support organizational change management.

• Ensure viability of performance metrics and improvement efforts.

• Support integration/upgrade of technology and clinical informatic needs.

Professional Growth

The ACNO will evaluate her/his own performance and professional practice relevant to statutes, regulatory, and organizational criteria. The ACNO will

• Engage in self performance appraisal, identifying strengths, opportunities and potential.

• Acquire and maintain knowledge in administrative practice, including but not limited to nurse executive certification.

• Maintain active participation in professional affiliations and enhance own personal professional growth and development.

Human Resource

The ACNO is best positioned to collaborate with human resources and the CNO to optimize continuity of care in nursing. The ACNO will:

• Partner with human resources and nursing directors to review data for accuracy in vacancy rates, turnover rates, diversity numbers in nursing, ensure position control is correct and optimize best practices associated with recruitment and retention.

• Ensure completion of employee performance appraisals as per policy and inclusive of self-appraisal, peer-to-peer feedback, and identified goals with review of progress.

• Facilitate revisions of job descriptions in collaboration with human resources and the CNO.

• Responsible for having knowledge and skill in policies, procedures and guidelines pertaining to hiring, terminations, provisions and standards of nursing practice, HIPAA compliance and emergency operations planning.

• Participate in workforce planning, succession planning, residency programs, career advancement strategies and in tandem with the CNO and in partnership with Talent Acquisition.

Qualifications

Education/Degree

Required

• Master's degree in nursing required.

Preferred

• Doctoral degree preferred.

• Nurse Executive Certification preferred

Experience

Required

• Preference is five years of robust nursing management of delegates, practice, and operations experience.

Licensure

Required

• Current licensure from Massachusetts Board of Registration as a Registered Nurse.

• Computer proficiency required. Microsoft Office applications are preferred with the ability to learn new software. Hospital business and financial acumen preferred.

Preferred

• National certification in a nursing specialty is preferred.

• Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, working with diverse populations.

• Work independently, be self-directed, and contribute as a member of a team.
