We are actively recruiting for an Associate Construction Superintendent (ACS) or Construction Superintendent (CS) to oversee and support the renovation of spaces across University Grounds.

Associate Construction Superintendents handle the day-to-day construction management and construction oversite services on small projects at the University. In addition, they assist Superintendents with larger scale projects, gaining the knowledge and expertise to beginning undertaking larger projects of their own. They help determine the scope, schedule, and budget on projects and work with all trades and subcontractors to ensure project terms are adhered to. Associate Construction Superintendents work autonomously on project documentation and logs however, they report to, and receive guidance from, their supervisor, and CS on larger scale projects.

Construction Superintendents coordinate the activities of subcontractors, and in-house trades on projects of various sizes. Superintendents drive the completion of both non-capital and capital projects by establishing, monitoring, and managing project requirements and schedule. They operate independently in managing routine tasks and communication related to construction from project initiation to completion, while also receiving guidance and direction from their supervisors.

C&RS offers a variety of services ranging from general trade support for small projects to full planning, design and construction support for renovation projects under $2 million and full construction services for projects over $2 million. Facilities Management supports the University of Virginia's wide range of academic, research, and patient care programs. With over 1,100 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for managing the University's Major Capital Construction and Renovations Program, the day-to-day operation, repair and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure, and grounds as well as other University owned and leased properties.

Associate Superintendent responsibilities include:
  • The ACS will assist CS's with all tasks below, to gain skills and experience in the position. When ready, the ACS will begin taking the lead role in these tasks on small projects with the guidance of Supervisor and experienced CS's, the projects scale and responsibilities will grow in line with the ACS skills and experience acquired.
  • Receive project assignments, and review project committee/customer goals for the project.
  • Assign project personnel to specific phases or aspects of project, such as technical studies, product design, preparation of specifications and technical plans, and product testing.
  • Review preliminary and final plans; make recommendations for improving engineering details and construction practicality.
  • Determine and ensure scope, schedule and budget are adhered to throughout the project.
  • Develop and maintain project documents, logs, and files to include status reports, submittals, change orders, and requests for information.
  • Oversee procurement of materials, services, and implementation documents.
  • Perform daily and final inspections of all assigned projects.
  • Provide detailed cost estimates for approval.
  • Obtain project and building permits when required.
  • Ensure contractors comply with negotiated contract documents and provide feedback.
  • Issue daily report, noncompliance notices, and cost issue log.
  • Oversee occupancy, turn over and close-out process.
  • Determine construction progress and resolve construction problems with project manager, architect, and contractor.
  • Develop schedules with all parties on the team and Update Project Resource Schedule on a regular basis with input from the construction team.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
In addition to the above, responsibilities for the Construction Superintendent also include:
  • Ensure the project scope, schedule, and budget throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Develop and maintain project documentation, including status reports, submittals, change orders, and Requests for Information (RFIs).
  • Supervise procurement of materials, services, and implementation documents.
  • Conduct daily and final inspections of all assigned projects.
  • Help provide detailed cost estimates for approval.
  • Help obtain necessary project and building permits.
  • Receive project assignments and review project committee and customer goals and objectives.
  • Assign project personnel to specific phases or aspects of the project.
  • Ensure contractors comply with negotiated contract documents.
  • Issue daily reports, two-week look ahead schedules, and help maintain a cost issue log.
  • Review preliminary and final plans and make recommendations for improving construction.
  • Oversee occupancy, turnover, and close-out processes.
  • Assess construction progress and resolve construction problems in collaboration with the project manager, architect, contractor and in-house trades.
  • Develop schedules in collaboration with all team members and update the Project Resource Schedule regularly based on input from the construction team.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned in addition to the above responsibilities.
Required Qualifications for the Associate Construction Superintendent:
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management, Architecture, or Engineering preferred.
  • Experience: One year experience (four years highly preferred) in project or construction management, commercial construction, architecture, engineering, or construction trades. In lieu of experience, a Bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, construction management, or related field.
  • Vaccination: This position requires compliance with UVA Health Policy OCH-002
Required Qualifications for the Construction Superintendent:
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent, Bachelor's degree highly preferred.
  • Experience: Four years' experience (eight years without Bachelor's highly preferred) in project or construction management, commercial construction, architecture, or engineering.
  • Vaccination: This position requires compliance with UVA Health Policy OCH-002
Physical Demands: Employee will be required to drive, travel, climb stairs, and sit for sustained periods of time keyboarding to perform their jobs.

Other Necessary Skills: A fluent understanding and frequent use of computer programs such as: MS Excel, MS Word, and the larger MS suite is a requirement for the role. Previous experience with scheduling software, eBuilder, Procore and Project Server preferred.

Anticipated Salary:
  • Associate Construction Superintendent: $29.81/hour ($62,000 annually); actual starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
  • Construction Superintendent: $72,000; actual starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
