Job Summary

The Associate Director is responsible for collaborating with the Director of Development (DOD) and other development team members in the Department of Internal Medicine in the planning, implementation and management of major and principal fundraising efforts for the benefit of Michigan Medicine. The Associate Director will manage and solicit a portfolio of major and principal gift prospects, conducting best-in-class identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities. The Associate Director will be accountable to the perfo rmance metrics and achieve the U-M development community standards set for that position as outlined below. The position requires on-site work three days per week at the Michigan Medicine Development offices. Some travel is required.

Responsibilities*

Strategic Planning:
  • In association with the DOD, help create and implement a comprehensive multi-year fundraising and campaign plan to significantly increase philanthropic support for the Department of Internal Medicine at Michigan Medicine.
  • Assist with the strategic direction in partnership with the DOD, Department of Internal Medicine and development team, to leverage opportunities to collaborate and partner with development core services/liaisons to cultivate and steward donors, to maximize the donor?s experience with Michigan Medicine development.
  • Have a comprehensive understanding of the Michigan Medicine Development and Department of Internal Medicine fundraising priorities to represent these both internally and externally.

Major and Principal Gifts:
  • Spend at least 70 - 80% time on direct fundraising. Personally maintain a portfolio of 125-200 major, principal gift, and planned giving donor/prospects. Conduct approximately 100 - 120 face to face visits with donor/prospects per year. Participate in approximately 20 - 40 solicitations per year. Complete 10 - 20 managed asks as well as 5 - 10 collaborative team asks with closure. Plan systematic, appropriate and effective solicitation strategies for major and planned gift prospects, focusing on gifts in the range of $100K or more.
  • Provide guidance for fundraising committees and related events and activities led by volunteers and others in support of Department of Internal Medicine fundraising activities.
  • Oversee the preparation of case statements, proposals, solicitation letters, stewardship reports, and other cultivation and stewardship material for prospects/donors.

Prospect/Pipeline Development:
  • Coordinate and facilitate activity that will directly result in prospect identification, engagement and successful solicitations, including advising chairs, department heads and development colleagues on the culture, expectations and needs of medical development constituents.
  • Work with faculty, staff and volunteers to identify and evaluate the giving potential of prospects through personal visits and research; develop and implement appropriate cultivation and solicitation strategies.
  • Ensure collaboration among development personnel in identifying referral opportunities and supporting the overall Michigan Medicine campaign goals.

Staff Mentorship and Engagement:
  • Provide guidance to Internal Medicine development in supporting fundraising committees and related events and activities led by volunteers.

Collaboration:
  • Develop and maintain strong lines of communication with colleagues in other Michigan Medicine units, the Offices of University Development, and appropriate schools and colleges across the University by demonstrating leadership in the development community to ensure effective collaboration and cooperation to achieve fundraising goals.
  • Through collegial consultation and cooperation, demonstrate and be a model of collaboration in the development community, while representing Michigan Medicine Development values and its unique role at the University of Michigan.
  • Represent the Michigan Medicine development department in internal and external committees and advisory groups as needed.

Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise a high degree of judgment and diplomacy, and an impeccable commitment to confidentiality is required, as well as highest integrity and ethics.
  • At least 7 years of progressively responsible development experience (Associate level).
  • At least 5 years of progressively responsible development experience (Assistant level).
  • Demonstrated success in raising capital, program support, endowment, and planned gifts.
  • Experience working in a complex environment like the Health System, with proven experience with securing major gifts in the range of $100K to $1M or more.
  • Excellent written and communication skills with an engaging, genuine and mature personal style.
  • Good listener and donor centric attitude; must enjoy and excel at working with a variety of types of people of all ages and communication styles.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as a proven record of working collaboratively and diplomatically with others is necessary.
  • To think strategically in a complex academic environment.
  • Must be able to manage several projects simultaneously, understand the need to re-evaluate priorities, and flourish in a fast-paced atmosphere.
  • Being a team player and willingness to collaborate is critical.
  • Three days per week of on-site work at the MM Office of Development offices.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Master's degree.
  • Knowledge of the University of Michigan organization, policies and procedures.
  • Experience in an academic health system setting with a comprehensive development program.
  • Ability to create innovative donor strategies for sophisticated/complicated gifts.
  • Experience working with donor boards and grateful patient programs.

Work Locations

The onsite location for this position is an office suite at the 777 Building. This provides free, on-site parking for staff.

The position requires on-site work three days per week at the Michigan Medicine Development offices.

This position works both onsite and remotely based on the business needs of the unit and may be eligible for flexible work opportunities at the discretion of the hiring department. Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change dependent on the business needs of the hiring department, throughout the course of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.
