General Information:

The Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DDEI) leads and supports university-wide initiatives focused on creating a sustainable culture of inclusivity for the diverse faculty, staff, students, and alumni of James Madison University.

Collaborating with various stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, and external partners, DDEI implements strategies that foster a diverse and inclusive campus environment and engages surrounding communities in mission-focused, mutually beneficial partnerships. The vision of the office is a diverse university where all thrive and excel. The following offices comprise the division:

The Associate Director position reports to the Director of the Title IX Office. This position will serve as primary investigator for formal complaints of harassment or other discrimination on the basis of sex. In addition, the individual will assist in implementing response protocols for reports of sex discrimination and other direct service, consultation, education/outreach, and administrative duties as assigned. The Associate Director will serve as Deputy Title IX Coordinator.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Case Management: Conducts investigations of formal complaints using established procedures, and in collaboration with the Director, provides oversight and leadership for investigation protocols. Participates in annual and ongoing training on conducting investigations that are fair and impartial. Records and maintains accurate, detailed records of all work.

• Direct Service: Provides information about resources and options to students, faculty, and staff who report having experienced harassment or other discrimination on the basis of sex in compliance with federal and state law. Meets individually with impacted parties and coordinates supportive measures including referral to on- and off-campus resources. Records and maintains accurate, detailed records of all work.

• Consultation: Provides advice and support to employees and departments on reporting responsibilities and how to respond to incidents and situations in a manner consistent with university expectations and federal and state requirements.

• Education and Outreach: Develops and conducts training and education for students, faculty, staff, and other constituents on Tile IX policies, procedures, and related topics. Assists with campus-wide collaboration with other university offices to facilitate understanding and implementation of Title IX policies, procedures, and related programs and initiatives.

• Administration: Assists with the management and oversight of Title IX Office operations. Represents the Title IX Office on various internal and external committees and work groups. Maintains current knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations related to Title IX and recommends appropriate changes to university policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

Required:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Demonstrated leadership in one or more of the following areas: Title IX or other compliance area, sexual misconduct/discrimination prevention and response, or DEI
  • Certification in Title IX investigation, or must be able to obtain within three months of employment
  • Awareness of trends and issues in higher education and Title IX, including familiarity with federal and state laws and policies
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with a variety of stakeholders
  • Proven ability to work as a team player

Preferred:
  • Master's degree in relevant field and/or higher education
  • Experience conducting investigations
  • Experience developing and delivering training related to Title IX or other compliance area, sexual misconduct/discrimination prevention and response, or DEI
  • Awareness of compliance requirements related to Title IX laws and regulations
  • Proven experience managing compliance-based administrative tasks and processes related to claims of sex discrimination and serving complainants, respondents, and the institution
  • Demonstrated experience in informal resolution
  • Demonstrated success in managing multiple investigations or other projects simultaneously
  • Experience with implementing recommended best practices in the management of Title IX programs and initiatives
  • Experience managing confidential materials
