Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal advice and services on issues concerning the rights, obligations, risks, and privileges of the organization
  • Protect the organization's rights in contract negotiations, settlements, and litigation
  • Acquire deep knowledge of the industry and our businesses so as to best advise senior business leaders
  • Advise enterprise stakeholders, including clinicians and clinical business leaders, on legal and regulatory issues related to Medicare Advantage and Medicaid in areas such as clinical diagnosing, documentation, and coding
  • Provide legal counsel in connection with internal investigations and responses to government inquiries and provide legal advice on complex and sensitive matters regarding various laws and regulations applicable to health care, including the False Claims Act, state and federal anti-kickback statutes, and physician self-referral laws

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate degree and licensed to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction
  • 5+ years of combined legal experience with a law firm, in-house legal department, or government office
  • Knowledge of health care law

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with legal and regulatory issues involving Medicare Advantage and Medicaid
  • Understanding of business problems related to assigned legal projects
  • Solid understanding of health insurance and/or managed care industry
  • Solid understanding of business, accounting, and finance topics
  • Familiarity with the False Claims Act, Anti-Kickback Statute, state consumer protection and deceptive trade practices laws, Stark Law, HIPAA, ERISA, and various other healthcare laws and regulations, as well as Medicare, Medicaid and commercial insurance plans
  • Familiarity with other federal and state enforcement provisions such as antitrust and securities laws
  • Proven well-developed written and verbal communications skills
  • Proven excellent presentation skills
  • Proven success in collaborating across a matrixed business and legal environment
  • Proven ability to evaluate and determine appropriate legal course of action to meet business unit needs
  • Proven ability to build and maintain rapport with superiors, peers, subordinates, and external company contacts

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
