The Associate Medical Director (AMD), under the general direction of the Executive Medical Director, Medical Unit, carries out activities requiring expert medical knowledge and judgment to oversee the delivery of appropriate care and benefits to California's injured workers. The AMD monitors a wide variety of processes within the Medical Unit of the Division of Workers' Compensation (DWC) and provides expert medical input to support the activities of the DWC. The AMD confers with the Executive Medical Director as relevant; participates in developing Medical Unit policies; conducts special projects as assigned; and performs other duties as required. In carrying out these activities, the AMD applies expert technical knowledge of worker injury and illness management, prevention, health promotion, and return to work.

Working Conditions
The position is located in DWC's Headquarters Office:

Oakland, CA 94612

The position is currently a full-time position with the option to reduce to part-time. The expectation is that the incumbent will work 20-40 hours per week, depending on the agreed upon time-base, in an office setting equipped with standard office equipment. Associate Medical Directors are expected to work all hours necessary to accomplish their assignments and fulfill their responsibilities which include maintaining regular and predictable attendance during working hours. Telework will be offered in accordance with current departmental policy.

Special Requirements

Possession of the legal requirements for the practice of medicine in California as determined by the Medical Board of California or the California Board of Osteopathic Examiners and possession of a valid medical or osteopathic specialty certificate issued by a specialty board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialists or the American Osteopathic Association and two years of experience in industrial medicine in a specialty involved in the direct treatment of occupational illnesses or injuries.

Knowledge of current principles and practices of general medicine, with particular reference to the diagnosis and treatment of industrial injuries and illnesses and occupational diseases, including preventive medicine; provisions of California's workers' compensation laws, regulations, policies, and procedures; the factors involved in, and procedures governing the establishment of, permanent disability ratings, medical service costs, and fee schedules.

Ability to effectively review and evaluate the work of industrial medical professionals, including their written work products; determine physical disabilities and the proper method of treatment; analyze and interpret workers' compensation laws and regulations; interpret and apply the policies and procedures of the Division of Workers' Compensation, and the Department of Industrial Relations as they apply to workers' compensation programs; establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals and groups; function effectively as a leadperson and in providing direction to other staff; speak and write effectively and present clearly oral and written findings and opinions; analyze situations accurately and take effective action.

Attention to detail and ability to develop and evaluate alternatives, analyze data, report, and present ideas/information effectively. Possess excellent and effective written and oral communication skills. Proficient in virtual meeting platforms. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Tact, reliability, good communications and interpersonal relations skills, willingness to travel, and strong professional motivation.
