In the role of Associate Principal for our Education, Science and Community (EdSciCom) practice, you will help guide the overall direction of the EdSciCom sector in New England and be part of the #1 Science team in the industry. The successful candidate must possess the drive, skillset, and charisma needed to develop a client base and to augment an unrivaled reputation for the core EdSciCom team throughout New England.

The role includes a variety of duties ranging including engaging in business development, leading pursuits, and directing project teams. Critical to this role is a commitment to developing and nurturing strong client relationships, beginning with pre-positioning activities and continuing through project execution. These client relationships will be essential to creating opportunities and maintaining HDR's position for future work.

Responsibilities include:

  • Contributing to the leadership and visioning for the EdSciCom sector in Boston and New England.
  • Developing capture plans and initiating relationships with key new clients.
  • Maintaining an active and visible presence in the EdSciCom sector.
  • Developing qualifications and proposals for EdSciCom pursuits.
  • Contributing to or leading pursuit go/no-go and strategy discussions.
  • Contributing to or directing interview strategies and implementation.
  • Preparing and negotiating project contracts.
  • Serving as Principal-in-Charge and/or Project Manager on projects as appropriate.
  • Maintaining project oversight throughout execution, including conformance to client expectations for technical/quality, financial performance, and schedule adherence.
  • Providing mentorship, guidance, and support to project teams.
  • In collaboration with EdSciCom subject matter experts, and independently when appropriate, developing abstracts and presentations for industry conferences, seminars, workshops, and other similar events promoting program messages, research, project outcomes, lessons learned, trends, etc. related to facility design.


Project types include learning / teaching environments and research and development facilities for academic, institutional, government, and corporate sector clients. Projects may include a variety of teaching, research, imaging, testing, and pre-production facilities in the areas of life sciences, physical sciences, biocontainment, animal research, public health, and related support facilities. Project opportunities are largely within the Boston area, but may extend to the rest of New England and potentially far beyond due to personal relationships, particular expertise, project needs, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in Architecture
  • Knowledge and experience within the local and regional Education & Science market
  • Business development experience in Education & Science consulting industry
  • Ability to collaborate and integrate with existing team
  • Experience and/or interest in sustainable design/LEED
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and comfortable presenting
  • Current professional architectural registration in resident state

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture
  • 10 years related experience
  • A minimum 5 years project management experience
  • Registered Architect
  • Must be able to lead a team on projects
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Project)
  • Knowledge and experience within the local and regional market
  • Good planning and mentoring skills
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
