General Description

Please note this is a "continuous recruit position" to build an applicant pool for all schools during the 2024-2025 academic year. Assists the principal in providing educational leadership for students and staff consistent with division goals. Responsibilities include administration of instructional and operational programs and activities; assisting principal in directing a staff of professional and support instructional personnel. Work is performed under broad policies and established objectives; decisions/actions impact the entire system; contacts are regularly and frequently made inside and outside the school system.
Essential Job Functions

  • Assists the principal in administering and evaluating the instructional program of the school.
  • Provides leadership in initiating in-service programs and organizational improvements.
  • Provides leadership and direction to the school teachers and support staff. Coordinates curriculum development with Instructional Services, administrators, specialists and teachers. Communicates division wide policy, procedures, and guidelines to school staff.
  • Interprets School Board policy, procedure and guidelines to parents and public. Ensures compliance with existing applicable federal and state statute, policy and guidelines related to public schools and in particular the operation of programs for the academically talented and special education. Assists principal in directing extra-curricular programs to include athletic, performing arts, and academic activities.
  • Provides a climate conducive to effective communications through the use of faculty meetings, committees and individual conferences.
  • Communicates with parents by means of school programs, letters, telephone and personal contact.
  • Serves as an instructional leader; reviews and analyzes data to lead the school efforts in achieving high academic performance for all students.
  • Assists the principal in determining staffing needs with the appropriate Director of Middle or High School Education and the Human Resources Department, recommending staffing changes; and participation in the recruitment, selection, and assignment of the school staff.
  • May represent school at meetings, conferences, hearings, and other public forums; gathers citizen and parental input.
  • Responsible for completion of school master schedule.
  • Provides planning for faculty professional development for academic year.
  • Provides oversight in the summer for custodial and maintenance work pace and completion.
  • Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence. Participates in professional development activities to enhance preparation for principalship.
  • Assesses student learning on an ongoing basis and alters instruction to meet group/individual needs.
  • Uses the curriculum of the district to plan daily instructional activities.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Budgetary Responsibility :

Provides assistance to the Principal in developing the budget, monitors school and activity fund budget.

Report Preparation :

As required.

Equipment Operation :

Uses standard office equipment and equipment related to education.

Contacts:

Contact with all levels of CCPS personnel, students, parents, workforce community. Occasional contact with School Board members and state administrators.

Work Direction/Supervision :

Provides work direction to teachers and staff and supervises teachers and staff in assigned schools.

Decision Making : High level of independent decision making is required.

Formal Policy-Setting Responsibilities : May provide input or recommendations related to policy changes.

Physical Demands :

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear, understand speech and speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly at normal levels indoors and on the telephone. Frequent walking, standing, light lifting up to 40 pounds, and other limited physical activities are required.

Work Environment :

Work is typically performed in a school setting to include classrooms, cafeteria and recreational areas. Regular coordination with school bus scheduling requiring outside activity in frequent inclement weather is necessary. Daily liaison activity throughout the school building and grounds is necessary. Occasional attendance to school related activities throughout the state and after normal working hours is necessary. Daily contact is made with students, teachers and school administrators. Regular contact is made with parents and the community. These contacts may be non-cooperative.

Qualifications

Considerable knowledge of the principles, concepts and methodologies of school administration; of instructional program planning; of child growth and development, total school operation and group dynamics and of related state and federal regulations. Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply regulations; to plan, organize and administer a public school and direct and evaluate a diversified professional staff. Demonstrated abilities in decision-making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships, long range planning and forecasting and to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Requirements

Must hold a valid Postgraduate Professional license will an endorsement in Administration and Supervision. Must have three to five years successful teaching and/or administrative experience.

Applicants must include evidence of an endorsement in administration and supervision. Ex. copy of teaching license, or transcript(s) demonstrating completion of VDOE-approved coursework + SLLA score report.
