The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary
Reporting to the Executive Vice President for Research (EVPR), the Associate Vice President for Research Initiatives and Development (AVP) is responsible for developing and implementing strategies for the enhancement of research at the University that match and promote Columbia's intellectual strengths.
The AVP leads a team that identifies and helps pursue opportunities for government, foundation and industry research funding, with a special emphasis on strategically important, multi-investigator, multi-year, interdisciplinary projects.The AVP encourages and develops strategies to partner with state and local governments, foundations, industry and other non-governmental entities.In doing so, the AVP works closely with research leadership and faculty and collaborates with partners both within and outside the Office of the EVPR, such as Columbia Tech Ventures.
The AVP leads the development of strategies to foster relationships with a diversity of academic institutions, including: public and state universities, community colleges; schools outside the NYC region; universities and colleges that serve underrepresented populations, specifically, HBCUs, HSIs and TCUs; and K-12 schools and organizations.
The AVP directs the team that manages the limited competitions for significant and/or prestigious funding opportunities that limit the number of applications that Columbia may submit and assists the EVPR in the management and allocation of funds within the Office of the EVPR that are used to catalyze early-stage research, support strategic initiatives and develop large complex center grants.The AVP also initiates and implements plans for shared research facilities and resources to support all investigators at the University
Responsibilities
- The AVP will be responsible for cultivating relationships with faculty and institutional leaders to be an effective thought partner in organizing diverse and inclusive research teams, engaging external partners, and developing management and outreach plans to capitalize on funding opportunities.
- Support the role of the University as a convener of stakeholders to define and explore vital and emerging questions.
- Encourage and develop strategies to partner with federal, state, and local governments, foundations, industry, the entrepreneurial community, and other non-governmental entities, including community groups.
- Develop and support partnerships with a broad spectrum of educational institutions including public and state universities, community colleges; schools outside the NYC region, particularly in EPSCoR states; and universities and colleges that predominantly serve underrepresented minorities.
- The AVP will seek to encourage faculty to pursue ambitious research goals. In support of this effort, this individual will:
- Plan strategically to actively create and pursue external funding opportunities for research strengths and interests at the University
- Gather, analyze, and communicate information about research funding opportunities to the University research community
- Implement a service model to support research initiatives and periodically revisit processes to ensure services meet both the research community's needs and University priorities
- Work closely with faculty and administrative staff for grant submissions: help to organize strong teams, help to create effective proposal strategies, for large center grants provide program management, and additional proposal support as needed which can include cost share and institutional support.
- Provide processes, online tools, and services to capitalize on funding opportunities.
- Connect faculty with relevant resources across campuses and schools, such as community outreach, data management, and research computing to support the development of these activities in their proposals.
- Work with the faculty and schools to create and manage shared research computational and data infrastructure
- Work closely with research leadership, faculty, and research administrators across all 19 Columbia schools and institutes. The AVP partners with staff both within and outside the Office of the EVPR, such as the Provost's Office, Columbia Tech Ventures, the Office of Alumni and Development, Columbia University IT, the Libraries, and Government Affairs.
- Direct the Office of Research Initiatives and Development (ORID) whose staff executes and operationalizes the activities, programs, and services set forth by the AVP in coordination with the EVPR and the research community.
- Assists the EVPR in the management and allocation of funds within the Office of the EVPR that target early-stage research and support of strategic initiatives and the development of large complex center-scale grants.
- Direct the management of the internal process for selecting candidates to compete for significant and/or prestigious funding opportunities that limit the number of applications that Columbia may submit.
- Partners with schools to help early career faculty maximize their chances of securing career-enhancing awards and to help mid-career and senior faculty maximize their chances of securing large-scale multi-PI, multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional awards.
- Prepares qualitative and metric-based analyses on the impact of its services in research development; maintains records on submissions, final reports, and trends.
- All other duties and special projects as needed
Minimum Qualifications

- Advanced degree in science, technology, medicine, and/or management and a minimum of fifteen years relevant experience or equivalent required.
- Experience in pursuing research funding and/or making business investments.
- Experience in building and sustaining strategic partnerships.
- Experience in building, managing, and improving organizations - both independently and through peers -- is important. Must be able to win the confidence and trust of faculty and administrators.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills necessary, including the ability to give clear, concise, and persuasive presentations of complex and/or scientific material.
- Must be able to function independently and exercise discretion and judgment in sensitive and potentially controversial situations. Must value confidentiality.
- Must be capable of directing projects requiring financial and complex data analysis

- Understanding of university research environments.
- Experience in prioritizing business investments.
