The Assistant Director of Nursing is a member of the nursing leadership team with administrative responsibilities within a unit/department/region. Manages the radiation oncology nursing care rendered to our patients at MedStar Health. Provides leadership and supervises nursing and front desk associates. Ensures appropriate nursing and front desk staffing is provided, including numbers and appropriately trained and credentialed staff. Maintains effective communication with clinical teams, internal and external physician partners and property management. Designated as the Clinical Leader for their specific region. Collaborates with nursing and other leaders across the radiation oncology services. Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing required and
  • Master's degree or Healthcare Related Field preferred
Experience
  • 3-4 years Experience in oncology or other related clinical care setting required
Licenses and Certifications
  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in the State of Maryland Upon Hire required and
  • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation within 90 Days required

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental regulations and accreditation standards.
  • Directs and coordinates the nursing and patient care delivery activities of the department-based professional and support personnel (e.g., front desk associates). Ensures the provision of holistic, culturally competent, and person-centered, quality, safe, and cost-effective evidence-based nursing care for patients/families. Liaison to associates and providers to ensure appropriate clinical care and workflow. Maintains adequate supply of patient education materials.
  • Collaborates with the Director/Senior Director of Nursing or Chief Nursing Officer in the hiring, evaluation, promotion, and termination of personnel within the assigned department, as needed. Initiates coaching and counseling of associates.
  • In collaboration with the Director/Senior Director of Nursing, develops standards of performance for associates, evaluates performance, and conducts performance management planning. Initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions. Sets clear expectations for performance and holds associates accountable. Maintains ongoing communication with associates to review programs, discuss new developments, and exchange information.
  • Ensures nursing coverage at all locations by coordinating staff scheduling and relocates nursing personnel to remote offices in accordance with patient needs and staffing requirements. Organizes and/or participates in clinic huddles. Directs and coordinates the nursing and patient care delivery of the department-based professional and support personnel. Coordinates the daily activities of the Radiation Oncology clinic operations.
  • Ensures appropriate infection control practices are in place including maintenance of prevention and control strategies for both patients and associations. Supports the practice of Infection Control Specialist within the MedStar Radiation Oncology Department. Ensures appropriate cleaning of scopes and other instruments as well as the practice of aseptic technique, hand hygiene. Directs and coordinates the nursing and patient care delivery of the unit-based professional and support personnel. Ensures proper disposal of medications and biohazard waste.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate. Supports and promotes quality and patient safety initiatives and high reliability standards. Leads unit-based safety huddles. Escalates care delivery concerns to the Director/Senior Director of Nursing and other leaders as necessary and following the chain-of-command. Takes action to ensure optimal execution of the National Patient Safety Goals, nursing sensitive indicators/measures, regulatory requirements, and other identified quality metrics. Identifies and participates in performance improvement opportunities as appropriate and based on findings.
  • Orders all medical and pharmacologic supplies for MedStar Radiation Oncology and ensures appropriate par levels that prevent interruption in patient care services.
  • Is accountable for handling and timely reporting of all safety events ensuring communication has occurred in a timely manner and that all necessary parties are informed. Follows up on safety events including reviews and action planning for improvement.
  • Ensures proper and efficient opening and closing of the Radiation Oncology Clinic. Coordinates communication with patients concerning clinic delays or closures. Facilitates patient scheduling and maintains efficient operations/patient flow in collaboration with other personnel such as radiation therapists and providers.
  • Maintains all equipment within nursing department (e.g., respiratory hygiene stations, scopes). Schedules repair of malfunctioning equipment. Schedules annual equipment performance inspection and preventive maintenance. Maintains emergency equipment checklist, emergency medication box, automated external defibrillator (AED) including battery and pads, and other emergency supplies.
  • Assists with compiling administrative reports, including benchmarking, quality and safety data, hand hygiene, and daily schedule and office throughput.
  • Maintains liaison with other disciplines, such as social services, dietary support, infection prevention, speech therapy, physical therapy, pastoral care and pain management. Ensures that their services are available to patients in an appropriate and timely fashion.
  • Participates in continuing education and professional development activities and offerings to nursing and front desk associates. Maintains continuing education files, competency assessment documentation, licensure, and specialty certifications for self and the associates within the department.
  • Maintains inventory and dispensary logs. Dispenses as ordered, medication and nutritional supplements. Stocks exam rooms. Orders and maintains inventory of linen, oxygen, and other supplies for the clinic.
  • Provides direct patient care to Radiation Oncology patients which may include rounding at the various Radiation Oncology practices. May also function in a direct care/registered nurse capacity at the Radiation Oncology practices. Documents appropriately, in various EMR systems. Accesses patient information from various IS systems. Assesses patients for special needs and plans appropriate intervention, i.e., skin changes, dietary needs, social service needs, health care psychological and support needs. Provides pertinent information to all physicians.
  • Serves as the liaison between Medstar Ambulatory Services and Medstar Radiation Oncology Department ensuring that all policies and procedures are aligned and implemented.
