Job Description

3:30 P.M - 12:00 A.M

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assigns staff to deliver care using the team nursing approach and based on the acuity level of patients.
  • Ensures the completeness of admission assessments of patients admitted during his/her tour.
  • Actively participates in planning the care of patients on the unit and evaluates this care against Department of Nursing and Medical Nursing standards.
  • Assists in coordinating medical, nursing, and other healthcare team activities on patients.
  • Prepares staffing schedule for the unit on his/her assigned tour under the guidance of the supervisor.
  • Ensures participation of staff on his/her assigned tour in the use of the nursing process on patients, especially concerning areas of assessment, planning, and specific intervention activities such as patient teaching and discharge planning.
  • Provides direct nursing care as needed:
  • Admits patients
  • Plans nursing care documents on the nursing care plan
  • Intervenes on identified problems/needs:
  • Transcribes physician orders correctly
  • Administers medications, treatments, and nursing measures
  • Teaches patients and significant others
  • Evaluate response to intervention
  • Documents these responses
  • Report pertinent patient information to the supervisor, head nurse, physician, and co-workers in a timely fashion
  • Assists supervisor and head nurse in providing direction and guidance to staff of medical unit on assigned tour.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability to changes in work assignments and staff availability.
  • Acts as a role model and ensures staff compliance with the Department of Nursing and medical nursing policies procedures, safety, infection control, and fire regulations.
  • Participates in quality assurance monitoring activities of the assigned medical unit.
  • Utilizes appropriate lines of communication in reporting pertinent information about patients, staff, and other problems.
  • Assists the head nurse in coordinating unit routines and keeps the head nurse informed of patient care issues.
  • Ensure the readiness and availability of code blue carts at all times.
  • Demonstrates competence in code blues.
  • Ensure participation in staff in-services and observance of safety regulations.
  • Assists the head nurse in identifying safety hazards in the unit and reports these to appropriate authorities in a timely fashion.
  • Enforces infection control policies and procedures.
  • Assumes responsibility for seeking continuing education.
  • Attends nursing-related educational programs both inside and outside the hospital.
  • Seeks assistance from Supervisor and/or head nurse as needed in solving clinical and management problems.
  • Observes attendance and punctuality regulations of the nursing department.
  • Conforms to the uniform code of the nursing department.
  • Wears identification badge at all times while on duty.
  • Observe and ensure staff conformance to hospital policies on patient rights and maintenance of patient confidentiality.


Minimum Qualifications
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
2. Holds, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and
3. Six (6) months of experience as a registered nurse.
