The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is seeking an Athletic Field Maintenance Team Leader for the Parks & Natural Resources Division (PNR) to provide daily guidance and coordination of field work performed by maintenance and specialized crews assigned to maintain and enhance the County's diamond & rectangle athletic fields.

Specific duties include:
  • Controlling and monitoring costs related to specific projects and overall assigned budgets;
  • Establishing crews and departmental priorities and deadlines, including determining alternative resources such as contractors or specialized units;
  • Coordinating scheduled maintenance and responding to repair requirements;
  • Reviewing, initiating and assigning electronic work orders and work requests daily;
  • Working with Park Managers and coordinating activities with staff in other units;
  • Performing annual safety inspections on athletic fields and equipment;
  • Training and instructing employees on the use of a variety of specialized equipment, tools and technical procedures, including safety and using personal protective equipment;
  • Ensuring adherence to federal, state and local regulations and County standards;
  • Performing administrative duties, including completing time sheets, conducting annual performance reviews, using computer programs/systems, tracking and monitoring supplies and equipment, and preparing reports; and
  • Performing other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum:
  • High School Diploma, GED, or Graduation from Vocational School; and
  • Three (3) years of trades work that includes providing leadership to other trades workers and/or managing trades projects.
Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
  • Experience with automated/electronic work order systems;
  • Experience managing athletic field maintenance or park maintenance in an urban environment;
  • Experience coordinating the work of others in a team-oriented work environment;
  • Possession of a valid Pesticide Applicator Certificate Registered Tech; and/or
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Driver License (CDL) A or B.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Employee will be required to operate a County vehicle to perform assigned duties at other Arlington locations. Employee must possess a valid driver's license. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of their official driving record. Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of the driving record.
  • Candidate must possess or obtain within 12 months of appointment to this position, a Virginia Registered Technician certification for pesticide application. Any employee hired without this certification will be appointed as a trainee until the certification is obtained.
  • Candidate must possess, or obtain within one year of Registered Technician certification, a valid Commercial Applicator license in categories 3A and 3B.
  • Requires learning and adhering to all safety rules and regulations pertaining to job functions which include attending all required safety classes and meetings to ensure a safe working environment and team members are practicing the required safety rules and regulations.
  • The employee provides emergency support during weather events which may occasionally require working beyond an 8-hour workday. Emergency work may include snow clearing, sand bagging, clearing debris from streams and crossings, spreading ice melt materials and operating snowplows, snow blowers, shoveling, snow brushes or other snow equipment.
  • Work is performed throughout the County Parks, including outdoor work performed in all types of weather conditions.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Work hours: Monday - Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Employee must be available to work in emergency situations, after hours, evening and weekend work.
  • Work is performed as part of a 24/7 operation and the worker must be available to work shifts as necessary.
  • Mandatory overtime may be required on short notice.
Work location: Office is at 2700 South Taylor Street, Arlington, VA 22206, but work may be performed at Parks throughout Arlington County.
