Summary

The Athletic Trainer will work directly with sport administration, coaches, physicians, athletic counseling and sports psychology personnel, sports dieticians, strength and conditioning personnel, performance and applied sports science personnel, and other allied health personnel to deliver comprehensive healthcare and lifetime wellness services for University of Michigan student-athletes. The Athletic Trainer will have a wide-range of clinical and administrative daily responsibilities to include the prevention, evaluation, management, treatment, and rehabilitation of student-athletes; pre-participation physicals; inventory management of supplies and equipment; maintaining medical records; completing required insurance claims; daily interaction, communication, and relationship building with coaching staff, strength and conditioning and sports performance personnel, physicians, fellow athletic trainers, other members of the medical community, and athletic administration; attending team practices and events; supervising other athletic trainers and athletic training students; assisting with various administrative duties; and performing other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities*

Essential Functions:
  1. Serve as the primary medical contact and liaison between members of the coaching staff, student-athletes, parents, physicians, members of the Student-Athlete Health & Welfare Team, other allied health personnel, sport administration, and others for the assigned sport(s).
  2. Provide a high level of customer service and communication at all times to all entities.
  3. Clinical application and administration of comprehensive health care and lifetime wellness services for student-athletes as assigned to include the prevention, evaluation, management, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses under the supervision of team physicians.
  4. Attend assigned team practices, competitions, strength and conditioning sessions, and other team events as needed and/or directed.
  5. Maintain a safe environment for student-athletes to include decision-making involving the ability of student-athletes to safely return to practice or competition following an injury and/or illness and communicate participation status with the appropriate personnel.
  6. Medical documentation and record keeping
  7. Counseling and education of student-athletes.
  8. Coordination of medical coverage for various athletic events, including Big 10 and NCAA Championship events.
  9. Assist with University or NCAA Substance Abuse Testing as directed.
  10. Maintain the organization, administration, inventory, and staffing of athletic training facilities.
  11. Adhere to all policies and procedures as defined by the NCAA, Big 10 Conference, University of Michigan, and University of Michigan Department of Athletics.
  12. Adhere to the Code of Ethics and credentialing requirements of the Board of Certification of Athletic Trainers (BOC) and the State of Michigan Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA)
  13. Act as liaison with other members of the athletic department team in issues involving student-athletes, including compliance, academics, athletic counseling, nutrition, strength and conditioning, performance and applied sports science, and others.
  14. Participate in special projects, committees, or other initiatives as assigned.
  15. Represent the University of Michigan and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at University, State, Regional, and national conferences and/or meetings as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  1. Supervision, education, and preceptor of students enrolled in the athletic training education program.
  2. Supervision and education of other athletic trainers as assigned.

Travel:
  • Travel with assigned team(s) as needed and/or directed.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's Degree in athletic training or a related field;
  • Master's Degree in a related field;
  • Minimum of three (3) years related experience in intercollegiate or professional athletics;
  • Certified Athletic Trainer by the Board of Certification of Athletic Trainers (BOC);
  • Eligible for athletic training licensure by the State of Michigan Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA)
  • Compliance and understanding of Big Ten Conference and NCAA rules;
  • Ability to champion a culture of innovative thought, life-long learning and continuous improvement;
  • Ability to meet Continuing Education requirements as established by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification and the State of Michigan;
  • Ability to follow policies and procedures set forth by the University of Michigan and the University of Michigan Department of Intercollegiate Athletics;
  • Familiarity with sport specific injuries;
  • Familiarity with manual therapy techniques;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Must be able to establish and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, coaches, student-athletes, physicians, and other allied health personnel;
  • Must possess problem-solving and critical thinking skills, innovation and creativity, adaptability, initiative and stress tolerance to various situations in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment;
  • Must provide a high level of customer service;
  • Ability to work long hours, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, nontraditional work hours, extended periods of time without days off, travel, and be on-call as a regular part of the position;
  • Ability to lift heavy objects, stand for long periods, work in various environmental conditions, and assist injured individuals on / off playing surfaces; and
  • Proven ability to multi-task, work independently, prioritize, and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated successful leadership and decision-making skills;
  • Demonstrated track record of developing collaborative relationships with both internal and external constituencies;


Desired Qualifications*

  • Athletic Training Student preceptor experience
  • Working knowledge of electronic medical record system
  • CPR/First Aid Instructor
  • Strong manual therapy skills
