Job Summary

This position will assist with the development, coordination, and administration of a comprehensive sports medicine program for IU Indianapolis and specific sports as assigned by the Director of Sports Medicine.

Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Performs a variety of duties regarding injury prevention, treatment, and management for injuries and post-injury rehabilitation and refers to team physician and medical consultants if necessary.
  • Attends practice, training sessions, and travels with assigned sports to provide medical care as needed.
  • Performs administrative duties as assigned per the Director of Sports Medicine.
  • Performs duties of student-athlete injury management, acute management, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention.
  • Serves as a liaison between the department and medical personnel, sports dietitians, coaches, parents, and student-athletes.
  • Oversees the scheduling and follow-up visits of athletes to physician visits, diagnostic tests such as x-rays, MRIs, bone scans, laboratory tests, etc.
  • Documents all evaluations, treatments, rehabilitation, and medical provider visits in the sports medicine documentation software.
  • Administers the insurance programs for the varsity athletes, including but not limited to obtaining the most practical policy to provide the necessary coverage within the established guidelines; advises athletes and their parents or guardians regarding insurance policies and procedures; assists athletes in filing claims.
  • Performs administrative duties as it relates to athletic training and the athletic department as assigned by the Director of Sports Medicine
  • Prepares daily reports monitoring types of injuries, treatments, comments on a plan of action, and submits to the coaching staff.
  • Coordinates with the team physicians and assists in the administration of pre-competition annual physical exams for athletes before their first day of practice.
  • Works with other staff members within the assigned sports and athletic department to help solve problems that will affect the student-athletes.
General Responsibilities
  • Complies fully with all NCAA, Big Ten (or other conference) and Indiana University rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment. Adheres to the Code of Ethics of the National Athletic Trainers Association and State of Indiana Practice Act.
  • Evaluates, provides treatment and rehabilitation, and documents athletic injuries in consultation with health care professionals and in accordance with established practices, guidelines, and protocols.
  • Refers student-athletes to various medical resources and provides information based on injury evaluations in collaboration with medical professionals.
  • Serves as an on site physical health consultant for assigned teams during practices, competitions, and special events to ensure adequate treatment of injuries and appropriate response to emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Advises, develops, and implements plans for injury and illness prevention, emergencies, and environmental monitoring to ensure safety of participants during practices, events and competitions.
  • Supervises and reviews the performance of students in the undergraduate and graduate athletic training programs.
Qualifications

EDUCATION / WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in athletic training or a related field and 2 years of experience in intercollegiate athletic training; OR
  • Master's degree in athletic training or a related field.
Preferred
  • Master's degree.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required
  • BOC upon date of hire.
  • CPR/AED upon date of hire.
  • Standard First Aid upon date of hire.

Working Conditions / Demands

This position requires both sedentary work and long durations of movement about the workspace. It requires the ability to move and transport objects and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential tasks with or without an accommodation.
