Departmental Overview

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 275 staff members and coaches and sponsors 30 varsity sports programs. These 30 programs include more than 850 student-athletes who participate in the various sports programs annually within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). We are currently seeking an Athletic Training Intern who will work within the department's Sports Medicine unit.

Description of Position:

The Athletic Training Intern will work with our Division I athletic teams and other sports/duties as assigned. Specifically, they will assist with direct provision of injury evaluation, athletic training, and rehabilitation services for intercollegiate student-athletes. The interns will work in collaboration with Sports Medicine staff, the Head Athletic Trainer, and Team Physicians. This is a one-year contract position.

Responsibilities
  • Sport team responsibilities/assignments as specified by the Head Athletic Trainer.
  • Communication with coaches, student athletes of assigned teams, and staff athletic trainers.
  • Access for patient athlete appointments with the medical staff, and coordination with physicians/medical personnel on care of student-athletes.
  • Injury reporting, documentation, and maintenance of medical charts.
  • Inventory, ordering, and restocking of clinical and clerical supplies.
  • Ensuring safety of patients and staff by enforcing safety procedures.
  • Appropriate training and adherence to regulatory requirements (e.g. blood-borne pathogen training and prevention, annual TB testing, and other health screening requirements).
  • Maintenance and upkeep of the athletic training room and other sites as designated.
  • Other duties as specified by the Head Athletic Trainer.
Required Qualifications
  • Good standing with the NATA and certified through the BOC by June 2024
  • Sensitivity to student-athlete issues.
  • Proven ability to meet multiple demands in a high-volume, fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Proven ability to work independently, prioritize, and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills required for working with a diverse group of patients, clinical staff, managers, and visitors.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion handling sensitive matters involving patients.
  • Computer literacy, including working knowledge of word processing programs.
  • Ability to work with and in a diverse environment.
  • Comfort working in a complex, dynamic, and fast-paced environment.
Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Experience in a competitive athletic environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Additional experience as a certified athletic trainer in competitive athletics at the professional and/or Olympic level.
  • Experience with advanced manual therapy skills applicable to orthopedics and sports medicine.
  • Knowledge of electronic medical records.
Education/Training:
  • Master's degree in related field and/or equivalent experience/training.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $19.00.
  • This is a 12-month, 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), contract position that is eligible for full UC benefits with the possibility of extension.
  • This position is non-exempt and bi-weekly.
