SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

Under the direction of the Fleet Maintenance Manager and Assistant Fleet Maintenance Manager, helps plan, develop, coordinate and implement training programs to establish, maintain, and or improve job skills for Fleet Maintenance employees. Acts as liaison between Edison Automotive Program and Department of Transportation Fleet Maintenance, coordinating and overseeing new hire and internship level candidates in the shop and classroom area. Develops and administers training in accordance with state, federal, local and schools system regulations for transportation personnel. Assists with the development of standards and guidelines for staff activities; and helps train and develop staff on preventative maintenance and diagnostic repair procedures. Operates as a mobile technician for all repair shops. Responsible for working with all levels and shifts of Fleet Maintenance staff in repairing/diagnosing and educating on repair/diagnostic procedures. Works with fleet management to establish a standardized system to identify mechanical defects in equipment and implement repairs as needed. Prioritizes and performs year-round preventive maintenance plan and repairs to include diesel engine repair, air brakes, air suspension, chassis, electrical systems, transmissions, air conditioning systems, etc. Gain understanding of pertinent Federal and State DOT regulations and integrate routine compliance into all aspects of Fleet Maintenance work. Completes all related paper and electronic documentation in a professional, accurate, consistent and timely manner. Responsible for maintaining personal knowledge of and ensuring unit knowledge of the latest methods in vehicle diagnostics and repair, with particular emphasis on electronic systems. Maintains open, transparent and positive communication regarding all aspects of vehicle maintenance and safety with fleet management, operations team, repair technicians, and drivers.

CERTIFICATE LICENSE:

Possession of a valid State of Maryland Class B commercial driver's license, with air brake, passenger, and school bus endorsements. Ability to obtain PASS UST Operator Class B certification within 6 months of hire.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of automotive repair training; detailed understanding of the principles of the engine, electrical, transmission, emissions and related automotive systems. Knowledge of fleet maintenance, inspection, and repair programs and procedures. Ability to work efficiently with the Fleet Maintenance staff of all MCPS garages and provide technical advice/expertise. Ability to coordinate employee training programs and maintain training records. Ability to determine training needs and to develop and carry through to completion programs to meet those needs; ability to accurately evaluate training needs. Considerable knowledge of the parts, tools, accessories, and materials used in automotive repair. Significant expertise and understanding of computer diagnostic procedures, programs, and materials. Considerable skill in analyzing problems concerning all aspects of the computer diagnostic operation and recommending or implementing actions to overcome difficulties in the day-to-day preventive maintenance operation. Possess excellent oral and written communications and be able to positivity and effectively communicate with all customers.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:

Automotive Technical Certification required. Associate's degree preferred. Five years or more experience in the field of automotive repair and professional management experience. Additional certified training in mechanical repair, transportation, management or other related field desirable. Other combinations of applicable education, training and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities and skills to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
