Under the supervision of the Equipment Maintenance Supervisor, the Automobile Mechanic performs and maintains a preventive maintenance program on designated automotive equipment. Automobile Mechanic to perform, supervise, coordinate, and assist with work in connection with major repairs to designated automotive equipment. Duties include major engine overhauls, tune-ups, relining and adjusting of brakes, wheel aligning, transmission and differential replacement and repair, and minor body repair. Inspects automotive equipment to determine the necessary corrective action. Operates and maintains automotive shop equipment; advises in the selection and storage of automotive parts, tools and equipment; estimates the cost of automotive repairs; instructs operators in the proper operation and servicing of their equipment; does minor welding and brazing work; keeps simple records and makes reports. The Automobile Mechanic shall possess and maintain a valid California Drivers License. Maintain order and supervise the conduct of incarcerated persons assigned in the Garage. Supervise and instruct them in their work and submit periodic written appraisals of their conduct and productivity; prevent escapes and injury by them to themselves or others or to property; maintain security of working area and work materials; inspect premises and search incarcerated persons for contraband. Inform supervisors of any issues or problems that may arise in the operation of the Garage.

This job posting is being used to fill one permanent, full-time Automobile Mechanic, Correctional Facility position. The vacancy will be filled in accordance with implemented hiring restrictions.

You must have taken and passed the Automobile Mechanic, Correctional Facility examination, be a current state employee with lateral transfer eligibility, or have reinstatement eligibility in order to apply.
