Duties

Supervises and leads three or more employees in accomplishing trade and labor work. The highest level of nonsupervisory work supervised is Automotive Mechanic, NA10. Plans work to be accomplished by subordinates. Assigns work to subordinates based on priorities. Evaluates work performance of subordinates. Finds ways to improve production or increase the quality of the work directed. Hears and resolves complaints and identifies developmental and training needs of employees. Administers day-to-day operation and briefs the supervisor regularly on section issues, developments and concerns.

Gets work started. Sets work pace. Demonstrates work methods and provides work related guidance. Ensures that worksite materials and tools are available. Checks on work and meets productivity goals. Ensures employees follow security, safety and housekeeping rules. Conducts on-the-job training.

Troubleshoots, repairs and/or overhauls major components and systems such as; engine transmissions, differentials, transaxles, electronic fuel injection systems, emission control systems and related electrical, electronic, hydraulic, fuel and other assemblies. Tears down, adjusts, repairs, reassembles and runs operational checks on components of these systems following instructions contained in technical manuals. Isolates and repairs complex malfunctions which are often difficult to trace by a combination of visual and auditory examinations and uses a wide variety of test equipment. Observes safety, sanitation and hazardous waste disposal rules and requirements. Operates vehicles to test repair and move around facility. Ensures all assigned areas are cleaned and maintained. Responsible for equipment maintenance/repair; identifies items that cannot be repaired in-house and provides for their maintenance requirements. Enforces safety regulations and environmental compliance requirements. May operate a cash register to create customer quotes for related services.

Provides World Class Customer Service with an emphasis on courtesy. Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner. Takes action to solve problems quickly. Alerts the higher-level supervisor, or proper point of contact for help when problems arise. Adheres to safety regulations and standards. Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occupational illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor. Adheres to established standards of actively supporting the principles of the EEO program and prevention of sexual harassment.

EVALUATIONS:

Qualifications

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: Skill to supervise and lead employees in accomplishment of work. Must have thorough knowledge of the makeup, operation and installation of complex major automotive systems and assemblies to troubleshoot and repair systems. Must have the ability to troubleshoot and replace standard electronic components of systems. Ability to interpret and apply technical repair manuals, technical specifications, schematics, engineering drawings, diagnostic codes, computer printouts and safety manuals. Skill in the use of hand/power tools and electronic test equipment. Must have knowledge of cash handling procedures.

Must have a valid drivers' license and ASE Certificate is required. An ASE Master certification is preferred.

RESPONSIBILITY: Completes repairs and installations and assigns work to subordinates. Work is performed independently based on personal knowledge, judgments and decisions within framework of oral and written instructions and accepted trade practices. Determines type and extent of repairs needed. Completes repairs and adjustments in accordance with manufacturers' specifications and service bulletins, and ensures vehicle systems function in accordance with safety regulations. Assures overall work of subordinates meets accepted trade practices.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work is often performed in tiring, awkward and uncomfortable positions. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling and crawling. Lifts and carries objects up to 45 lbs independently and objects over 45 lbs with assistance.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposed to drafts, noise, fumes, dirt, dust, grease and vehicle fluids that may cause irritation to skin. Must wear protective equipment. May come in contact with and be required to handle hazardous material/substances.
