JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Automotive Technician

REPORTS TO: Supervisor

JOB GOAL: To provide excellent vehicle maintenance services for all District buses and other vehicles

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Three (3) years of experience in a comparable position
  • Valid Alabama Driver's License
  • Possess and maintain a valid Alabama bus driver license (ABL) and commercial driver's license (CDL) with P/S endorsement
  • Maintain a current Alabama School Bus Physical or ALDOT Health Card as required by state law or the Alabama State Department of Education • Meet Hoover City Schools insurable driver requirements
  • Possess and maintain Alabama School Bus Mechanic certification within six (6) months
  • Ability to prioritize tasks
  • Ability to make estimates of time and material needed for efficient project completion
  • Ability to climb and work from scaffolding, ladders, and heights
  • Ability to engage in prolonged sitting or standing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning and reaching
  • Strength and agility to lift and carry objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds; ability to exert up to seventy-five (75) pounds of force
  • Ability and willingness to work indoors and outdoors year-round in noisy, crowded environments, in various temperatures, and weather conditions • Ability and willingness to work after hours, weekends, or holidays if necessary • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance
  • Ability to meet suitability criteria under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457
  • Such Alternatives to the above qualifications as state, federal, and local law and the Board may require

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, mission, goals, and priorities
  2. Performs monthly safety inspection on buses as required by the State of Alabama
  3. Performs maintenance by diagnosing, maintaining, and reconditioning systems for all vehicles and equipment owned by the District (including, but not limited to, suspension systems, steering systems, differentials, engines, transmissions, exhaust systems, electrical wiring systems, ignition systems, brakes)
  4. Completes and maintains written maintenance records for all vehicles owned by the school system
  5. Assists as needed with minor automotive body repairs
  6. Maintains shop/service area and equipment; promotes high standards of safety
  7. Properly uses and maintains responsibility for tools, equipment, and material resources of the District
  8. Performs road call duty as needed
  9. Drives buses and transports students as directed
  10. Responds promptly to call out in emergency situations
  11. Performs all mechanical maintenance services with priority on student and employee safety; removes from service any bus or other vehicle that is unsafe to operate
  12. Returns buses or other vehicles to active service only after identified maintenance problems have been corrected
  13. Engages in work-related training to increase knowledge and skills as directed and/or for advancement
  14. Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters
  15. Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility
  16. Report potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel
  17. Responds to inquiries, requests, and constructive feedback in a timely and positive manner
  18. Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner
  19. Properly uses and cares for tools, equipment, and material resources of the school system
  20. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures
  21. Adheres to local Board policies, administrative procedures, and other like directives, as well as state, federal, and local laws
  22. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s)
