The University of Washington is seeking multiple dedicated individuals to assist with a life history study of the Tinian Monarch, a recently delisted songbird, in the Northern Mariana Islands. The technician will work with the crew leader to conduct territory mapping via radio telemetry, bird banding, and nest searching. This is a seasonal position, starting April 1, 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter and will end 4 months after starting (approximately July 31, 2024).

All work will be conducted on the Military Lease Lands on Tinian. Flights to and from Tinian will be provided. Shared housing and a field vehicle will be provided while on Tinian. Field and office work will be 40 hours per week. Tinian Island is a small, tropical island with about 3,000 residents. It is part of the CNMI, a commonwealth of the United States. The island is remote but is fully developed with stores, restaurants, and other infrastructure.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct territory mapping with radio telemetry.

  • Banding Tinian Monarchs.

  • Conduct nest searching for Monarchs.

  • Deployment of camera traps for nest monitoring.

  • Data entry and data quality checks.

  • Carry out other field work needs such as vine removal, rat monitoring, habitat/vegetation surveys as needed.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Two years of college or related experience (i.e., a relevant college major such as biology, ecology, fish and wildlife, or professional position).

  • Previous experience with mist netting, telemetry, and data collection.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years college credits with major study in engineering or science, OR two years of work experience equivalent to that performed by a research aide.

  • Experience using binoculars to locate and identify birds.

  • Experience working alone and in small groups.

  • Ability to adhere to health and safety guidelines.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn bird songs.

  • Experience hiking and bushwhacking.

  • Familiar with word processing and Microsoft Excel.

  • Experience using navigation tools, GPS and compass.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • A valid driver's license.

  • Ability to hike (1-2 miles) through rugged terrain in all weather conditions (from driving rain to 90° heat) while carrying 30 lbs. of field gear.

  • Comfortable with encountering large spiders, thorny plants, stinging wasps, and mosquitos.
