Your Role and Responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
• As part of a multi-functional team, you will help expanding the memory management of the z/VM operating system.
• You will have the opportunity to work on virtualizing a bleeding edge hardware architecture and work with customers and stakeholders from design, development, and test to field support of the product deliverables.
As a key member of our dynamic team, you will play a vital role in crafting exceptional software experiences.

Your responsibilities will comprise of design and specifications for new enhancements, coding, test automation, problem determination and bug fixing, performance analysis, submitting your code to upstream community repositories, and solving client problems.

In this job offering, we are specifically looking for new team members to grow our zVM and KVM development, test and service squad.

Introduction
We are looking for qualified software engineer candidates to be part of our IBM Z Systems team, to help us take z/VM and KVM virtualization to the next level on the mainframe. z/VM provides a highly secure and scalable environment for efficiently running critical Linux applications, with support for more Linux virtual servers than any other platform in a single footprint. The IBM mainframe is responsible for most credit card transactions and is used by the many of the top insurers, banks, retailers, and airlines.

Our Linux development team is responsible for enhancing the Linux kernel for IBM Z / IBM LinuxOne including its device drivers, libraries, tools, compilers, debuggers, virtualization (KVM) and test automation (CI/CD). We tightly collaborate with the international development teams of IBM (e.g. hardware and firmware development), the global maintainers of Open Source communities, and our Linux distribution partners (Red Hat, SUSE, Canonical). Our focus is on the support of the IBM Z / LinuxONE architecture, e.g. new processor instructions, new I/O attachments (PCIe, NVMe, Ethernet, RDMA etc.) and accelerators for AI and cryptographic functions. Linux on IBM Z / LinuxONE forms the basis of many of IBM's commercial solutions in Cloud, Analytics, Finance, and AI.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise
  • 3+ years of experience in Virtualization and Linux development
  • 2+ years of experience in low-level/assembler development
  • 2+ years of experience in operating systems and virtualization/hypervisor development
  • Expert skills in operating systems internals (e.g. memory management & task scheduling, interrupts, device drivers)
  • Expert skills in source code repository systems (e.g. git), scripting languages (e.g. Python) and test Automation (e.g. Jenkins) skills


Preferred Technical and Professional Experience
  • Skills in virtualization and emulation technologies
  • Skills in current I/O technologies (e.g. PCI, NVMe, RDMA) and Memory Management technologies
  • Skills in IBM Z architecture (Principles of Operations), Z assembler and I/O concepts
  • You are highly motivated
  • Demonstrated communication skills

The compensation range and benefits for this position are based on a full-time schedule for a full calendar year. The salary will vary depending on your job-related skills, experience and location. Pay increment and frequency of pay will be in accordance with employment classification and applicable laws. For part time roles, your compensation and benefits will be adjusted to reflect your hours. Benefits may be pro-rated for those who start working during the calendar year.
