The UPMC Center for Emergency Medicine is looking to hire a Full-Time Professional Flight Paramedic to support MedEvac 3, located in Cranberry, PA.

Purpose:

The Base Lead Professional Flight Paramedic functions as a member of the critical care transport team and is responsible for the care of critically ill or injured patients transported by the STAT MedEvac system. Responsibilities include patient care incorporating assessment, stabilization, and intervention techniques consistent with standards and protocols approved by the Medical Director. Support and achieve organizational goals by assisting the Regional Medial Manager (RMM) in coordinating and overseeing daily operations at assigned base to ensure safe, efficient, and expedient service; interacting with leadership, medical crews, pilots, mechanics, hospital representatives, and other emergency service agencies; facilities operations; record keeping, data entry and collection. The STAT MedEvac Base Lead - Flight Paramedic fulfills education and experiential requirements as established by the STAT MedEvac Medical Director, and performs other duties as assigned, functioning as a professional representative of STAT MedEvac System Supports and upholds the mission, goals, and objectives, of the STAT MedEvac system at all times.

Responsibilities:
  • DEVELOPMENT: Serves as a role model for professional paramedic practice. Demonstrates a passion for developing others. Identifies opportunities for clinical quality as well as workplace improvement. Builds and mends relationships among colleagues within the framework of a healthy workplace. Assist with and monitors system-wide competencies for assigned base. Actively promotes employee engagement working directly with the RMM with focus on developing, executing, and monitoring base specific engagement and action plans. Assists RMM in determining topics/agendas for team meetings and communications.
  • CLINICAL: Provide advanced critical care life support to critically ill or injured patients in adherence with established protocols and standards of care; accessing online medical command or other resources when appropriate, and employing the skills, competencies, and judgment necessary to provide patient care in any environment; using resources that are required or made available. Documents appropriate assessment, interventions, and other pertinent patient information in a timely manner. Collects and promptly processes demographic, medical necessity, and other necessary billing information. Participates constructively in the peer-review driven quality improvement program.
  • OPERATIONS: Adheres to system standardization, policies and procedures, and other established practices to ensure prompt efficient response, safe operations, and quality patient care. Meets all deadlines for certifications, clinical competencies, or educational requirements. Ensures safe operation of patient laden stretcher employing appropriate stretcher discipline at all times with a patient laden aircraft or ground unit. Maintains safe loading, unloading, adjustment of head of stretcher, and stretcher movement. Base stock rooms / supply cabinets are within par levels and all dates are monitored for expiration. Ensure and audit the completion of daily equipment bags are checked and monthly bag weights are completed. Assists with scheduling and covering call-offs / shift openings at the base and within the region when on-duty. Assists the RMM with special projects as needed or assigned, while maintaining flexibility to adapt priorities based on changing business models.
  • SAFETY: Ensures the safety of patients and all others functioning in and around the aircraft. Utilizes appropriate safety channels to report safety concerns and uses tools available to enhance a safe work environment. Promptly reports actual or potential safety or security concerns via the RMM and/or SMS processes.
  • OUTREACH: Reflects a positive attitude to the customer in a high stress environment at all times along. Demonstrates the ability to establish a rapport with customers; including the ability to create and sustain a positive relationship; regardless of circumstances, environment, or patient presentation. Participates in scheduled and unscheduled outreach activities, representing the UPMC and STAT MedEvac system.
  • EMPLOYEE HEALTH: Maintains fitness for duty by adhering to all employee health requirements, including maximum weight, hearing conservation program, and required medical screenings. Reports injuries and completes the appropriate documentation, no matter how minor, to a supervisor in a timely manner. Assists RMM in ensuring crew members are mission ready and compliant with the company weight policy. Responsible for assisting in auditing processes and weight partners (rotor wing only).
  • OVERSIGHT: Provides oversight in base orientation and the precepting of any newly hired crew. May work with clinical instructor if one is assigned to the base. Provides continual follow -up with new hire(s) and preceptors to identify any weakness or deficiencies. Identified issues are forwarded to the RMM and Education Department for review. Ensures standardization of assigned base according to system-wide checklist and resources to include but not limited to, expiration dates, medication logs, aircraft checklist, and other areas applicable to the base. Assures maintenance and oversees adequate stock of drugs and supplies aboard transport vehicle/aircraft. Validates durable equipment, both portable and on-board are proper functioning and reports any deficiencies. Ensures equipment is properly maintained and calibrations of medical devices are completed, and documentation is complete and up to date in the equipment tracking software. Oversees the crews properly complete forms pertinent to billing, inventory, risk assessments, safety audits, VMR, calibrations, and narcotic signatures. All vehicles assigned to base are checked per policy to confirm compliance with all SOPS, EMFAT, and CAMTS standards, including all documentation. Also, responsible for ensuring final internal review of vehicles due for EMFAT or CAMTS inspections.


Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Minimum of three years of experience at an ALS service.
  • Must be at Senior Professional Level or above at STAT MedEvac.

Must maintain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on annual performance evaluation to maintain status. Successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam that includes a maximum height/weight restriction of 6-2 and less than or equal to 210 pounds, fitness for duty physical exam, hearing evaluation, and be declared fit for duty by the Medical Director. Must be eligible to receive medical command authorization by the Medical Director, have reliable transportation, and be willing to travel to any STAT MedEvac base site as assigned. Must be able to successfully complete the prescribed orientation program, including classroom, clinical rotations, educational competencies, and on the job flight training. Must have the ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities, and specialized equipment. No corrective action in the past 12-months and rated superior or above on last evaluation.
