Chief Purpose of this position: The Department of Internal Medicine, Virginia Commonwealth University seeks a basic scientist to join the Division of Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine (PCCM). PCCM supports innovative preclinical, translational clinical research mechanisms of fibrotic lung diseases, epigenetics of tobacco related lung disease, non-invasive biomarkers of advanced lung disease and clinical trials on novel lung therapeutics. The incumbent will have a growing and research program focused on the elucidating novel mechanisms for the pathogenesis of fibrotic lung diseases. This will be coupled with rapidly emerging clinical programs in advanced lung diseases. It is expected that the incumbent will have the opportunity to collaborate with clinically active pulmonologists, departments such as pathology and radiology and scientists across the enterprise in engineering and pharmacology. Employees working in or with VCU Health in any capacity will be required to comply with all relevant health system policies and procedures, including the health system's vaccination requirements.

Position Responsibilities:

Teaching | 10% - PCCM fellowship (introduction to research lectures); Bioengineering

Research | 85% -The investigator will lead a preclinical and translational research program that collaborates across advanced lung diseases and bioengineering

Service | 5% - It is expected that the faculty member will participate in established research firms within the division as well as research focused initiatives within the Department of Internal Medicine

Required Qualifications:
  • Ph.D., D.Sc. and/or MD and an outstanding track record in research and teaching
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Training and research in areas that would foster collaboration between PCCM and the growing VCU Biomedical Engineering Department. Related research strengths in Biomedical Engineering include imaging, biomaterials, and mechanobiology of disease
