Job Description

SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

REPORTS TO:

The BHA Supervisor on each tour who in turn reports to the Associate Directors of Nursing for CPEP, In-patient Services and Assistant Director of Nursing for Child and Adolescent Services.

PURPOSE OF POSITION

Under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) and/or Physician, and in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, preforms crisis and/or de-escalation interventions, therapeutic observations, engagement, client supervision and other behavioral health related duties; including assisting in the implementation of seclusion for clients presented to behavioral health services for psychological assessment and treatment.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Engages, interacts and assists with working with patients in a therapeutic milieu and with a clinical team approach (with an emphasis on patients identified as high risk).


  • Welcomes patients to the service, (CPEP, EOU or In-patient) and reviews safety rules.


  • Helps identify high risk patients and uses crisis intervention practices and alternative intervention techniques to maintain a safe environment.


  • Understands and identifies patient characteristics, triggers and other patient/environmental variables in order to assist patients in maintaining and/or regaining self-control and communicates such information to treatment team.
  • Demonstrate positive role model for patients, families, visitors and staff.


  • Participates in unit meetings which may include: shift hand-off meetings, unit rounds, community meetings, team meeting and committee meetings.
  • Assures safety of patients, visitors and staff through property safety checks prior to entry to patient care areas including: inspects and catalogues patient's and visitor's belongings upon arrival; affixes property labels and stores al property requiring safe-keeping; properly store or disposes of contraband; assures the patients and visitor's property is safely held and returned as soon as appropriate.


  • Assists in the assessment of need for, as well as, the application and removal of restraints.


  • Participates in debriefing after codes, incidents, use of restraints, when needed and completes tracking and review forms.


  • Member of the In-PERT (unit-based Psychiatric Emergency Response Team


  • Leads or co-leads discussion groups on topics such as anger and safety.
  • When needed and in collaboration with inter-disciplinary team participates I reviewing charts and incident reports when directed by administration, as needed to identify possible preventable factors and presents these findings to the treatment team.


  • Participates in group supervision and case conferences.


  • Performs observation and monitoring of assigned patients on a one on one basis and conducts hourly rounds a hallway monitors when assigned. Reports observations, interactions and client activity to assigned nursing and other clinical staff.


  • Communicates clinical matters to assigned RN or other professional staff as required.


  • Escorts patients during transfer, for testing, or for admission on or off facility premises.


  • Demonstrates knowledge of emergency procedures, fire safety, evacuation procedures, and internal/external disaster plans and procedures


  • Participates in quality assurance/performance improvement activities and departmental and/or facility wide training as required.


  • Performs related work to ensure the safe operation of the unit. May be assigned to be a member of Ex-PERT (External to the unit Psychiatric Emergency Response Team).


Minimum Qualifications
• High School or G.E.D
• Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
• One (1) year of satisfactory work performance as a Nurse's Aide
• Knowledge of Electronic Medical Record/ EPIC
