JOB SUMMARY
Works under minimal supervision to oversee daily operations for our state-of-the-art maker space, supporting hands-on project work, research, and innovation in the new Texas Instruments Biomedical Sciences (BMES) Building, housing UT Southwestern's Biomedical Engineering Department and faculty and researchers from UT Dallas's Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Chemistry, Departments. The Biodesign Center contains an advanced 3D printing lab, precision electronics workshop, and machine shop that will be utilized by UTSW/UTD students, faculty, and staff.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Required
  • Education
    Bachelor's Degree in biomedical, mechanical, electrical engineering or a related field
  • Experience
    3 years of related experience in biodesign research and/or technology development projects
    Additional work experience may be considered in lieu of stated minimum education on a year-for-year basis.
JOB DUTIES
  • Oversees day-to-day activities of the Biodesign Center to ensure safe, efficient, and productive use of space and equipment.
  • Provides safety training to ensure all users are certified to run all equipment safely and efficiently. This may involve developing curriculum, teaching in a classroom environment, preparing videos for distance and flipped classroom learning, and facilitate corporate sponsored certification learning.
  • Supervises user machining skills and behaviors in fabrication shop, coordinating user activities in fabrication of electrical and mechanical components.
  • Interfaces with collaborators to onboard new projects, manage workflows, and maintain communication throughout project lifecycles.
  • Assists users as they analyze designs and blueprints to determine processes, materials, tooling, machines, and sequence of production.
  • Maintains tools/machines to ensure equipment remains in working order through preventative maintenance.
  • Oversees procurement of materials, upgrades to tools/software, and expansion of fabrication capabilities.
  • Fosters collaborative, interdisciplinary environment, and creative project-based work.
  • Administers lab functions by scheduling rooms and equipment.
  • Functions as Biodesign Center Core Director who along with the Department/Center administrator of BME is responsible for financial oversight of each core within the Biodesign Center. Will be expected to propose initial prices/rates based on cost data and subsequent adjustments, ensure operations are in compliance with both federal and UT Southwestern policies, and monitor expenses and revenue.
  • Ensures that services are delivered and charged to users and facilitates collection of payments. Maintain a schedule of rates and services on the UT Southwestern intranet.
  • Establishes and implements processes for the Biodesign Center to ensure smooth operations. Maintain and update these processes on a regular basis.
  • May supervise staff at a lower rank.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
