General Description

The Baruch STEP Academy is an academic enrichment program focusing on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education and providing college preparation. Managed through the CUNY Research Foundation, we serve 250 middle and high school students throughout the city annually. The Fall 2024 Program will operate over 10 Saturday sessions, September 28th through December 7th (excluding November 30th).

High School Biology Instructor (In-Person)

Course Title: Ethics in Biotechnology
Schedule: 10 Saturdays from 10:35am-12pm

Course Description: This advanced science ethics course will explore the use and evolution of biotechnology. Students will develop critical thinking skills while examining the ethical implications of past, current, and future developments- not limited to CRISPR, genome editing, biohacking, drug development, the Tuskegee Experiment and the legacy of Henrietta Lacks.

Additional Information: This course is designed for 11th and 12th grade students interested in the medical and health professions.

Salary $1,125= [$45/hr x 2.5 hrs (1.5hr instruction + 1 hr prep) x 10 sessions]

Priority Application Deadline: August 15

Other Duties
  • Prepare and teach curriculum for 20-22 students
  • Evaluate individual student and group performance
  • Provide staff with measurable results in student learning through assessments
  • Monitor and maintain student attendance records
  • Reassess curriculum based on students' needs, interests, and understanding of materials
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications

Required:
  • Availability for each program day from 10:35am-12pm
  • Degree in STEM, social science, or education
  • Prior teaching experience
  • Ability to design and implement a course curriculum
  • Possess a strong classroom management style
Preferred:
  • Strong background in the subject area
  • Prior teaching experience with high school or undergraduate students
  • Ability to engage students with creative lessons and innovative teaching style
  • Possess good interpersonal skills with adolescents and a strong understanding of their maturity levels
  • Enthusiasm for the subject with flexibility in adjusting curriculum to reflect students' abilities and interest

About the Research Foundation

The Research Foundation of The City University of New York (RFCUNY) was established as a not-for-profit educational corporation chartered by the State of New York in 1963.
