Job Description

Purpose of Position:

Under medical direction, performs work of more than ordinary difficulty and responsibility in the operation and monitoring of biomedical machines, devices, equipment or instruments in a hospital, clinic or other medical facility. Assists as a member of a medical research or clinical team. May supervise operation of one or more units; performs related work.

Responsibilities:
  • Performs some of the more difficult and specialized examinations or treatments in one or more of the following areas: heart-lung machine, hemo-dialysis, cardiac catheterization, pulmonary function, electro-diagnostic machines, analysis of blood gas, ultrasound, hyperbaric chamber.
  • Consults with medical staff to determine, evaluate and accommodate patients' needs
  • Participates in demonstrations of methods and techniques to technical staff, students or professional personnel.
  • Assembles, inspects and maintains equipment in efficient operating condition, cleans and sterilizes equipment, makes minor adjustments and repairs. Prepares requisitions for major repairs and replacements.
  • Participates in studies and research projects.
  • Serves as member of a team of physicians, nurses, etc., in some of the more difficult and specialized examinations and procedures.
  • Administers, if assigned, to one or more medical machine units and the management of the equipment and supplies utilized in its operation. Schedules tests for patients. Supervises and trains technical and auxiliary staff assigned to units, prepares work schedules and evaluates performance


Minimum Qualifications
1. Associate Degree, which included courses in the bio-medical technician field, and two years experience in the appropriate bio-medical technician field in an approved hospital or health facility; or,
2. Senior high school graduation or possession of an Equivalency Diploma, and three years experience in the appropriate bio-medical technician field in an approved hospital or health facility; or,
3. A satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience.
4. Employees performing blood analysis require certificates of qualification issued by the New York City Department of Health in subspecialty of 29 (Ph blood gases) or specialty 28 (general clinical chemistry).

Note: Effective January 1, 2015, employees performing central service functions, while serving in the Group 12 title of Bio-Medical Equipment Technician (215620), must either possess valid certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) issued by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management or as a Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) issued by the Certifying Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, or be grandfathered. Grandfathering requires that employees provide evidence that they have been employed in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one (1) year occurring between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2014 and that they have competently performed central service functions during the course of their qualifying experience and will continue to be able to competently perform such functions during the course of their employment at HHC. In addition, these employees will be required to annually complete ten (10) hours of continuing education credits in order to remain qualified to perform central service functions at an HHC facility.
