Responsible for coordination of the evaluation and preparation of patients for Hematopoietic Stem Cell (HSC) transplantation and cellular therapies. Works under general supervision in the management and care of patients with oncologic and hematologic malignancies and other diseases that are treated with Hematopoietic Stem Cell transplantation and cellular therapies. Job Duties
  • Works with physician to determine appropriate timing of pre-transplant or cellular therapy diagnostic testing, various assessments, and the procurement and/or infusion of stem cell or cellular therapy products.
  • Coordinates the scheduling of transplant or cellular therapy related care including hospital admission. Works in conjunction with multidisciplinary team throughout the various stages of the transplant or cellular therapy process.
  • Educates patients and their families about the transplant or cellular therapy process and what to expect during each phase.
  • Utilizes critical thinking skills in planning and prioritizing workload and managing multiple responsibilities.
  • Coordinates, reviews, and distributes all results of transplant or cellular therapy testing to the clinical team.
  • Coordinates and obtains authorizations for medications and procedures as needed during phases of transplant and cellular therapy process.
  • Coordinates all necessary testing and appointments for patients and related donors; to include the evaluation and collection process for transplant or cellular therapy treatment.
  • Counsels donor and family regarding donation; reviews history; assists transplant physician with the review of all pertinent blood work and tissue typing.
  • Coordinates National Marrow Donor Program search for patients in need of an unrelated donor.
  • Coordinates tissue typing and analysis of samples for any and all potential donors. Interprets specialized tissue typing reports to assist the transplant physician in selecting the best possible donor.
  • Facilitates coordination for acquisition, receipt, and infusion of all stem cell and cellular therapy products with outside institutions.
  • Ensures that each patient understands and voluntarily signs the consent for transplant or cellular therapy, chemotherapy, and transfusion of supplemental blood products.
  • Participates in routine and special patient care conferences.
  • Attends multidisciplinary team meetings for disease site specialty.
  • Collaborates with the program administrator in short, intermediate, and long-range planning for the transplant and cellular therapy program through regularly scheduled staff and individual program meetings
  • Maintains applicable training requirements associated with transplant and cellular therapy processes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Experience and Education
  • BSN required.
  • Three (3) years oncology nursing experience required; prior BMT/Hematologic Malignancies experience required, and transplant coordination experience preferred.
  • Licensure as Registered Nurse by Board of Nurse Examiners for State of Texas,
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) are required.
  • Oncology Nursing Society Certification: OCN, CPHON, CBCN, or BMTCN Certification required within one year of hire.
