Job Duties

The Department of Environmental Quality's (DEQ) Blue Ridge Regional Office (BRRO) is seeking a qualified Water Monitoring Specialist to perform water quality monitoring for ambient, lake, trend, high frequent bacteria, and TMDL development / implementation programs. The agency's extensive water monitoring network provides the data that serves as the foundation for many of the agency's business needs. BRRO has managed and operated the Statewide Freshwater Probabilistic Monitoring Program since 2001 and conducts the work as a team. This position also supports the National Aquatic Survey team leader and assists in National Lake Assessment and National River and Stream surveys which provide significant 106 grant monies resources to DEQ.

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of Aquatic ecology.
• Knowledge of and experience with water quality field data collection.
• Knowledge of environmental science and practices.
• Knowledge of environmental law and regulations.
• Knowledge of biology and chemistry.
• Demonstrated skills with technical writing; and statistical techniques.
• Demonstrated fish identification skills.
• Extensive practical computer skills to include knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Additional Considerations

• Boating operation and trailering experience with canoes, rafts, and motorboats.
