All staff in positions which regularly require driving either company or personal vehicles while performing work on behalf of Community Action are required to provide Human Resources proof of a valid driver's license for a motor vehicle record check both at hire and annually thereafter. Human Resources will conduct a motor-vehicle record. These records will be held as confidential records in Human Resources. All accidents will be reported to Human Resources within 48 hours.

Position Summary:

In support of the Agency's mission, the Bus Driver is responsible for transporting children enrolled in Community Action's Head Start program in a school bus in a manner that meets Head Start Performance Standards, Policies and Procedures and is consistent with requirements established by the Oregon Department of Education. Family members may be transported on an occasional basis to scheduled program events. In addition to transporting children, duties also include communicating verbal and written information about program events and schedules in a pleasant and respectful manner.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Follow fixed transportation routes to ensure the safest and shortest route possible given the locations of the children and center.
  • Maintain bus schedule to ensure timely arrival at designated stops.
  • Transport children and, on an occasional basis, family members for regular class days and occasional evening meetings.
  • Ensure that children are always accounted for and are correctly released to their parents or authorized guardians.
  • Ensure that parents, family members and children follow Head Start policies and procedures with respect to the safe transportation, pick up and drop off of passengers.
  • Deliver program materials to parents on route via the children.
  • Perform daily inspections of the bus to ensure and maintain proper maintenance of the Agency owned vehicle.
  • Report vehicle damage and/or malfunction immediately to Transportation Supervisor.
  • Maintain the interior of the bus in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Maintain required paperwork for bus maintenance and Head Start program requirements.
  • Assist in classroom as needed, and as time allows, under direction of teaching staff and Program Area Supervisors.
  • Share appropriate information regarding enrolled children with teaching staff and center coordinators.
  • Share appropriate information regarding enrolled children with teaching staff on a daily basis.
  • Strictly adhere to all safety policies and procedures at all times and respond/correct any at-risk safety issues immediately.
  • Strictly adhere to agency code of ethics and standards of workplace behavior.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet business needs including regular and reliable attendance and adherence to all company workplace behavior standards.

Required Education/Training/Experience:
  • Hold and maintain a valid Oregon Commercial Driver's License (Type B or C) with endorsements for School Bus Transport (S) and Passenger Transport (P).
  • Hold and maintain a valid Oregon School Bus Driver Certificate issued by the Oregon Department of Education (ODE).
  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Possess a driving record that is sufficient to pass a check of driving and criminal records by the Oregon Department of Education.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, which includes the ability to work and communicate effectively with staff, children and family members. Reads and speaks the English language sufficiently to understand highway signs and signals in the English language, respond to official inquiries, and make entries on reports and records.
  • Ability to work as a collaborative team member with teachers and coordinators, and a demonstrated ability to develop positive working relationships with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Under state and federal law, an offer of employment for this position is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment screen for illegal substances. Applicants who test positive for certain substances or who refuse to consent to such screening will not be hired for this position. All successfully hired candidates in this position will be required to submit to random drug and/or alcohol screenings in accordance with Department of Transportation and Federal Motor Carrier and Safety Administration requirements.
  • Incumbents in this position must notify his/her employer of any traffic violation (except parking violations) within 30 days of a conviction regardless of the nature of the violation or the type of vehicle which was driven at the time. The employer must be notified by the end of the next business day if a driver's license is suspended, revoked, canceled or if he/she is disqualified from driving.
  • Must be able to successfully pass applicable background and Oregon Central Background Registry checks prior to new hire processing and beginning actual employment.
  • Completion of appropriate DOT Physical and TB Testing according to Head Start and Oregon Department of Education regulations prior to date of hire.
Preferred:
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish, written and verbal.
  • Previous employment working with children ages 3-5.
Required Licensing or Other Special Certifications:
  • Hold and maintain a valid Oregon Commercial Driver's License (Type B or C) with endorsements for School Bus Transport (S) and Passenger Transport (P).
